Planning Ahead

Drabble

Have you ever done something like that? I have. Years ago I was on a business trip to Europe and bought an attractive tea-towel calendar (for the following year) for my mother-in-law. Unfortunately it was in the Fall so I decided to give it to her for Christmas. Yeah, sure. I completely forgot about it until the following Spring, when I came across it. I sent it then…it was still relevant for over half a year…but I learned my lesson. I still buy Christmas presents ahead of time, but I store them all in one place.

We read a lot about overcoming procrastination, but sometimes doing things too far ahead can do us in too. 🙂

What about you? Do you have any stories to share?

Like today. Shoveled the snow & an hour later, there it was again.
Also today I saw a pile of things I collected ahead of time that I wanted to give Marie who was here this summer.
I think of email messages to send & realize later I only planned them ahead but never sent them.

    bikehikbabe,
I especially like the one about mentally writing letters and forgetting to send them. On the other hand years ago my husband and I rushed one Sunday evening to write a check and address a birthday card to one of his nieces. Then a week letter I said, “Oh! We forgot to send Karen a birthday card!” My husband agreed but fortunately my daughter was home from college. “I can’t believe after all the fuss you made last week you forgot you already sent it!” Bless her. 🙂

Mostly when I was younger I bought things expecting I would use them in the distant future, such as cross country skis. It never happened.

Usually I don’t plan ahead and get 90% of my work done in the last second. Based on my behavior, the world’s economic output could be doubled immediately if we could simply double the number of last seconds.

    bikehikebabe,
Thanks for pointing out the typo. Yes, it was a week later, not a “week letter”.

    Looney,
Good point about doubling the number of last seconds. 🙂 I think we’ve all bought things expecting to use them then changing our minds. It’s part of the learning process.

That can’t happen to me. I’m not so well organized.

    gaelikaa,
    That works too. 🙂

    Planning ahead? What is it?

    rummuser,
Yes, your letting life unfold as it will seems to be working just fine for you. Patience and a sense of humor is a great life strategy.
