My Style

My style is “dress for the job you want,” and the job I want is unemployed independently wealthy eccentric recluse.
Maura Quint

That’s me!

“Unemployed independently wealthy,” of course, just means being retired and having enough to live on. Not all retirees would call themselves eccentric recluses, but I have a fair amount of that too. Yay, retirement!

What’s your style?

Ditto. If you want details, our native dress of dhoti/lungi/pajama for the lower body and kurta for the upper. All white. Loose and comfortable.

My style is a bit preppy with (I hope) a touch of the bohemian thrown in. I wear pants that move with me but no skirts any longer because I sometimes fall. Loose and often colorful tops. I like a neat look but also at least a slightly creative one, I hope. I don’t like paying attention to how I look beyond the minimal upkeep I need to keep people from asking, “Are you all right?” (because I sometimes look as ill as my physical illness makes me feel unless there’s a little effort made to look otherwise). I hate shopping and am happy to have a daughter who sometimes buys things for me. I was blessed to grow up not-ugly but certainly not the beauty that one of my granddaughters is, eyes following her everywhere from the time she was an infant. I thought so little of my looks that when I was rounding a curve on my mountain bike back in the mid 90’s, before this disease struck, and knew I was about to fall, hard, I immediately thought of my hands, needed for writing. I jerked my hands back so they wouldn’t be hurt and let my face slam into the ground instead. My nose took the brunt. A surgery later, my face was as good as new and maybe better, and I have proof that although I’m prone to the “does this look okay on me” typical worries, I’m not particularly vain! I dress (and plan my injuries, apparently) for my work, which is writing!

Wow, that’s impressive, to choose your hands over your face. I’m so glad you have your writing, that’s invaluable with all you have to cope with.

I’m afraid at my age I’ve long ago stopped worrying about how I look. Now focusing on not falling is another matter!

    ditto!
i’m not eccentric in my dress though.
around the wren house i live in shorts and tank tops in the summer.
and in the winter in the wren house i live in fleece pants and sweat shirts with hoodies.
my outside wear isn’t a whole lot different… tones of grey and cream… and taupe… and fleece pants and tops for warmth. or jeans and those tops.
sturdy sandals with argyle knee socks for winter and flip flops and sandals for summer!
in the summer my outside wear is cropped pants white and beige with easy flowing sleeveless tops. as COOL as possible!
i live on a ‘private income’ … as they say in english cosy mysteries. LOLOL.
my retirement actually… and social security. good old FICA.
i remember on ‘friends’ when rachael got her first paycheck and said . . .
“who’s this guy named FICA? and why did he get so much of my money?”
    LOLOL!

    • Jean says:

😀 I love the FICA joke. I’m with you, I wear comfortable clothes, nothing fancy, probably nothing that other people would call eccentric. And I would say Andy’s and my lifestyle is unusual, not sure what (most) other people would say. Not that it matters. 🙂

Comfort is everything for me. So my style is laid back and relaxed. One thing that I love about getting older is that I don’t care what anyone thinks about me!

  5. Evan says:

I’m probably a lot more of a recluse if you think online isn’t real socialising.

I wear scrub tops to work and jeans or capris.
We ordered our scrubs from a catalog at work. I’m the only one that ordered mine with a sweetheart neckline. I didn’t want a unisex one. :p
I discovered Sperry’s and now that’s the only shoe I wear.
The ones I have on today are tan and orange but I have other colors too.
At home I wear jeans, capris or loose yoga pants and big boxy T-shirts
or soft fleece sweatshirts. I prefer grey because I think that color (?) looks best on me.
Or if I’m going somewhere, I will wear a slightly oversized blouse. I hate anything that pulls or tugs on me.
I prefer to stick to the colors of white, black, blue, grey and tan.
Once in while I’ll wear turquoise or pink or even orange.
    Yep, that’s me.

  7. Cindi says:

oh, and I meant to add… I ALWAYS wear some make-up to work (my eyelashes and eyebrows are very fair and therefore invisible without it) and I make sure to have my hair styled, although in the summer it usually ends up wild and curly. I think that just because I have a job working in and outside with animals, doesn’t mean I can’t look pulled together.
But Sundays are my no-make-up day!

I could do with a revamp!

I told you about my clothing tastes from years ago, spontaneous might be the right word for then…

Since I broke my arm, some things were retired because I couldn’t get them on – if it has been summer no probs but long sleeved wintery things different…

this morning I needed to finally say that my holey purpose top had to be home only – so serached for another top that had been put away…
