Bertrand Russell

Man is a rational animal. So at least we have been told. Throughout a long life I have searched diligently for evidence in favor of this statement. So far, I have not had the good fortune to come across it.
—Bertrand Russell

Russell was one of my favorite authors when I was in high school. He still is.

Yes, a rational person is hard to find, even more so lately.

  3. About reason…and the need for proof! “Tell people there’s an invisible man in the sky who created the universe, and the vast majority will believe you. Tell them the paint is wet, and they have to touch it to be sure.”

My two favourite quotes of BR are:

“Men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education.”

“War does not determine who is right – only who is left.”

    • Jean says:

Yes, I’m familiar with those too. I don’t agree with him about education, because I believe in lifelong education, and the most important part of mine has been self-directed. That said, I did have a few good teachers in high school, they helped widen my horizons and I will always be grateful.

Another of his quotes about war:

Of all evils of war the greatest is the purely spiritual evil: the hatred, the injustice, the repudiation of truth, the artificial conflict.

I think we’re all a mixture of the rational and the irrational. We like to think we’re totally rational about every decision we make and every opinion we hold, but the truth is we’re often influenced by emotional considerations, or loyalties to other people, or just something that sounded convincing even if it wasn’t. Unfortunately as Cindi says the irrational seems to be taking over more and more. The bizarre claims and demands from the transgender lobby are just one example.
