Safety Instructions

At the beginning of every flight they always tell passengers how to use oxygen masks in an emergency:

If needed, four oxygen masks will drop from the compartment overhead. To activate the flow of oxygen, pull down on the mask until the plastic tubing is fully extended. Place the mask over your nose and mouth and breathe normally.

Secure the mask with the elastic strap. Although oxygen will be flowing, the plastic bag may not inflate. Continue wearing the mask until otherwise notified by a Crew member. If you are traveling with children or anyone needing special assistance, put on your mask first.

So it was interesting to see this Twitter message from a former flight attendant:

Andy and I no longer fly, but if we did we would now pay more attention to the poor flight attendant trying to tell us about safety. Accidents do happen.

oh my! i guess they can always text or selfieize (a new word i made up)
after or IF they regain consciousness in case of an accident.
kind of ties into Nick’s post. can’t teach people who already think they know or aren’t willing to listen or even pay attention!
i wouldn’t fly today. those days are over for me for many reasons. not all health related either. it’s just lost its appeal. totally!

Andy has refused to fly for over 20 years now. Too much regimentation. I still have fond memories and want to keep them.

The trouble is that those safety instructions are so boring when I’ve heard them a hundred times that my attention keeps drifting away. Also even if you take them in at the time, if you’re on a long haul flight you won’t necessarily remember them five or ten hours later.

    • Jean says:

That’s the point, they’re boring and people tune them out. It’s best to review them and mentally rehearse them before tuning out.

  3. I have a daughter in law who a flight attendant, and she mention that most people don’t listen to what there saying.
    Coffee is on

There is no shortage of idiots. Search for one and you will get thousands.

  5. I chuckled (even though it’s really not funny). I traveled a lot a few years ago, but try to avoid it now. But I remember tuning out the drone, they go on and on…But you are right. People should pay attention!

    • Jean says:

I’ve done that myself. They are boring and there are so few accidents. If I were to fly again I would probably mentally review the instructions and presumably the flight attendants won’t be so bored reciting them.

Even if they didn’t listen, it just makes sense to cover both your nose and mouth with the mask!
I don’t understand why they’d just cover their mouths.
    It’s just stupid.
