Goodbye, Facebook

Cindi pointed out the following screenshot and email could indicate a scam, but I initiated them by asking Facebook to delete my account. Thanks, Cindi.

Hi Jean,

We have received a request to permanently delete your account. Your account has been deactivated from the site and will be permanently deleted within 14 days.

If you did not request to permanently delete your account, please login to Facebook to cancel this request:

https://www.facebook.com/login.php

Thanks,
The Facebook Team

I’ve said before, I seldom use Facebook, but why deactivate it now? I don’t like the fact it’s trying to negotiate with banks and credit card companies to get its users’ financial data.

They claim it would be only users who use Messenger (whatever that is), and the users would have to opt in, but I never trusted Facebook before, and I do even less now.

Did this come via an email?!!!
    Do NOT reply!!!!
You’ve already been sent that bogus email in your SPAM folder.
This could definitely be someone after your information and I doubt that it’s actually Facebook.
Instead, log off and then go directly to your Facebook account and see if they’ve sent you a message there.
    This seems highly suspicious.
Please don’t click on anything on that email.
    Except to delete it.
If you don’t want Facebook and this is real, just do nothing but really I think this is a hacker.
(Messenger is just a way of privately and quickly messaging Facebook friends via Facebook and also being able to carry on multiple conversations with Facebook friends without going back and forth to each account. It’s really convenient if you want to talk to people all at once, especially if you are planning something… like meeting for dinner or a movie, etc. I use it and like it)
    Truly. Delete that!

Thank you so much for your concern — If I hadn’t asked Facebook to delete my account I would certainly have followed your advice. But in this case the image is a screenshot after I asked them to delete me, and the email was their confirmation. I was surprised it was so easy. They’re giving me a chance to change my mind. I had trouble deciding whether to deactivate my account (no one else could see me but I could activate it again by logging on) or delete it for good.

I added an explanation to the beginning of this post. Thanks for pointing out it was confusing, and that we have to be careful.

I know a lot of people really like Facebook, it’s just not for me. And I’m annoyed about their carelessness about privacy for those who want it.

  2. Computer and social media takes up to much time.

I love blogging and poking around the internet, but not social media. For me there’s not enough information for the time spent.

I never received an email like that and I DID delete my account.
they did NOT give me a time frame.
they emailed me that my request was being processed.
and that if I was in facebook at any time that the request would be ignored and I would be reinstated and still be an active member.
I want NOTHING to do with them. EVER. AGAIN.

Are you sure you asked them to delete it? That sounds more like deactivation than deletion, but they may have changed things.

Interesting experience and reasons given by you for deleting your account. I visit facebook everyday and receive messages in it as well as notifications. Apart from linking my blog posts on it, I rarely post anything. Since I don’t spend too much time on it, I think that I will just continue with it till something happens to change my mind.

I use Facebook a lot – for news not in the mainstream media, for amusement (cartoons etc), to see what friends are doing, to discuss political issues. I don’t really care what Facebook knows about me, it doesn’t affect my everyday life in any way.

I haven’t trusted FB from the beginning. I allow the account I opened just sit there. Keep wondering if I should just delete.

I took the summer off from it. Which has been a godsend. I was a member of many interesting groups on FB but my time got eaten up in daily discussions.

I am startled by how much I don’t miss it. And like you, I don’t trust it at all but have used it in the past to publicize my performance events and artisan sales.

I just read that many, many users are pulling away and deleting, suspending and deactivating due to infiltration/influence and selling of user data.

    I guess we’re on trend. 🙂

Facebook is great for publicizing and for groups, but for me it was always more trouble than it was worth, especially because I didn’t trust it.
