A Bit of Progress

Andy spent some time this week cutting down more trees to open up the view. I spent hours on the internet getting an education about roofing options and how we would need to install each of them. Steve (our architect/project manager) recommended asphalt, but we decided we really needed metal, both for durability and for lightning protection. It turns out there are metal shingles now, not just the standard standing seam panels, and they may be what we choose.

As far as I can tell the metal shingles are less complicated to install than the metal panels, but all roofs require care. YouTube has some great videos about incorrectly installed asphalt roofs. One of the problems with asphalt is the mistakes aren’t as noticeable until the shingles blow off or the roof leaks. As I said, I’ve learned a lot. Getting skilled workmen can be a problem in the mountains of Northern New Mexico, so it’s nice to know the potential problems ahead of time.

Tomorrow Andy is going up with the well driller to see which pipes need to be replaced in our water system, and tomorrow afternoon we have an appointment with the solar engineer who will design our photovoltaic system. So things are starting to happen.

Steve had continuing education classes in Santa Fe Monday-Wednesday, but presumably we will hear from him soon. We can’t get started on the foundations for the shed and the house until he finishes the plans and gets a building permit.

I’ve sent away for samples of roofing and siding materials so I can pick some colors. We received two samples of siding today and they look quite different from the colors on their website. Final decisions about the outside of the house can’t be made until we see what our possibilities are and how they fit together. There’s a good chance I’ll get that information before it holds up progress. I do believe in planning ahead!

What about you? Do you have any projects you’re working on? If so how are they going?

I’m working on clearing out my house of too much stuff, all of which I love. I need to get rid of half of it, but don’t know which half. 🙂

It’s happening but only by inches.

  2. Evan says:

Great to hear things are moving.

I’m in a holding pattern at the moment, no major projects.

  3. Cathy in NZ says:

Good to hear that this new project/challenge is keeping you entertained 🙂

My project/s are kind of in a holding pattern as well (thanks Evan for the idea)…

I realised just a few days that everyone that finds out I’ve completed my degree are getting boring as they all ask “what are you going to do now?”

I don’t know why but that is starting to annoy me because up until 5 years ago when most knew me they didn’t constantly want to know about my “FUTURE”

And everytime I message someone about something I have done/seen in recent days is replied with “oh, that’s a good idea why don’t you do something with that?”

Even close friends are doing it!! Why bl**dy the h*ll should I DO ANYTHING…

Or are they somehow trying to live their lives through me…

oops sorry for venting…life here is quite good for me personally, thanks 🙂

Now the question is, Cathy. What are you going to do now? 😀 Just kidding!

  5. Mike Goad says:

Our projects are in a holding pattern, too, until we get home, other than working on our physical fitness, which is improving. We’re getting a hike or two in every day. We took one rated as “strenuous” yesterday down into a canyon at Natural Bridges National Monument.

(Currently outside Page, AZ. getting ready to head to Grand Canyon for just under a week’s visit)

  6. Cathy in NZ says:

Mike, sounds like you having a successful hike or two and anyway projects that have no deadlines can certainly wait, take a break – you’ll have some fresh meditative (?sp) ideas on which path to take with them when you get home…safe journey

  7. Jean says:

    Cathy,
I would still answer the question with a “Whatever I feel like doing.” 😀

    Mike,
We went to Zion, Bryce, Capital Reef and Natural Bridges on a trip years ago. For some reason I liked Capitol Reef and Natural Bridges best. Probably because they were quiet and not crowded.

It seems to me you have a fine project, having fun getting into better physical shape.

  8. cathy in NZ says:

thanks Jean…”whatever I feel like doing” is a great idea…but the problem is when I’m with the people asking the questions all these well thought out responses get lost!

and I end up having the responses with myself much later on…which sadly just makes me even more angry with life 🙂 and their thoughts!

  9. bikehikebabe says:

Cathy, Practice. Say “WHATEVER I FEEL LIKE DOING” 10 times a day. And then do that.

Whenever I talk on the phone to Jean she ends it with “Have Fun” instead of the usual goodbye.
