I got your two sample questions right so I thought I’d do well on the quiz. But I only got 43% right. At least I’m honest.

i’m a happy person. but i only got 9 out of the 14 right!
i didn’t choose the part of the country that is the happiest! and i didn’t choose the right answer of what music does to or for us. for two wrong ones i remember!
    very interesting!
i missed the first one right off the bat too. but i have a bone to pick with that i think.
not sure i buy their research findings. if i’m remembering the question correctly! LOL.
this was fun monk. great post.

Like you I thought some people are naturally happy & some not.

I agree! I also don’t agree with them that negative emotions aren’t more powerful than positive ones. They say,

Although some studies do show that negative emotions are more powerful than positive ones right when they are happening — for instance, you’re more likely to be upset about losing $3 than winning $3 — positive emotions win out over time.

That’s true for some people, but I know a lot of people who focus on the negative.

tammyj you might wonder why I capitalize letters. It’s so automatic for me that it’s hard not to capitalize the 1st letter in a sentence.

It’s because Mother liked letters about the kids & I’d do 3 typed pages at a time. (I earned the $$ she sent.) Before mass computer use & “stream of consciousness” not using capitals was unheard of.

29-35 (but it doesn’t have to be that way).

False (unless you regard numbness as happiness).

  4. Evan says:

    As to the quiz.

    First question is meaningless.

    3. I’m not sure how an emotion ‘wins’ over time. Some people have their lives blighted by negative experiences. These may not be the majority but that is the problem with applying collective stats to individuals.

    14. Laughter expends energy so it helps you lose weight. They’re wrong.

I think the first question is worth considering. Dianne Athill in Somewhere Towards the End (written when she was 89, as I recall) thinks that some people are more naturally happy than others. If I remember correctly, she wrote about one woman who had gone through a lot in her life and wound up just about as happy as she had been when she was younger.

About question #3, some people go through very similar circumstances and some feel bitter and focus on the negative while others focus more on the positive. As I mentioned above, I think this one depends on the individual.

I didn’t get their answer for #14. I, too, said being happy helps you lose weight. I wasn’t thinking about laughter, I was thinking more of people who self-medicate with food.

This is a test of CommentLuv with the latest WordPress. For some reason the old CommentLuv links weren’t working, but it seems to be all right now.

What causes happiness is such a complex question, I wouldn’t know where to start! All I can say is that I’m generally a happy soul and nothing makes me miserable for very long. I have no idea why I’m that way inclined. Genetics? Upbringing? Being attracted to the right role models? The love of a good woman? Who knows? Anyhow, I got 12/14 on the test, for what it’s worth.

I agree with the quote, “Happiness is a choice that sometimes requires hard work.” In the 1970’s a therapist was ahead of his time and decided to find out why some people were happy and others weren’t. He concluded that happy people have made the choice to be happy. The ones he found didn’t have easier lives than the unhappy ones, they just valued happiness. For me it was a choice I made in high school.

  7. Rummuser says:

I am told at the end of the quiz that I have to try a bit harder as I got only 9 correct out of the 14 questions!
