Coffee

Is coffee good or bad for you? Yes. It depends on how much you drink. This is a cute video, but it doesn’t really answer the question.

Andy and I laughed about quitting being a headache. For several years when Kaitlin came home from college she suffered ferocious headaches. We didn’t know if it was the altitude or some kind of allergy or what. She eventually figured it out — it was caffeine withdrawal. She drank a lot of coffee during exam week, etc. and didn’t drink it here. We were happy that the problem was so easy to fix.

And a few years ago Andy had headaches in the afternoon, but drinking a soft drink relieved it. Who would have guessed Sunkist Orange drink has caffeine in it? As soon as we learned that we tossed out the remaining cans. Another problem easily solved.

Are you a coffee drinker? Have you ever had caffeine-withdrawal headaches?

I drink about 2 cups a day and, yes, I’ve had the headaches.

So far as coffee being good or bad for you, it’s one of those things that seems to depend on the day of the week and whatever the most recent study says.

used to enjoy some coffee. then health issues made me have to eliminate all forms of caffeine. -sigh- but actually when i eliminated it, i didn’t have headaches.

It sounds as if you weren’t drinking that much. Andy was clearly super sensitive to caffeine. I’m sorry you had to give up coffee. Decaf doesn’t work?

I am basically a tea drinker. I have one mug of home brewed coffee at mid morning every day. When I go out I have a couple more at restaurants or cafes or in the movie theaters. If I don’t have coffee nothing happens. Similarly, if I don’t drink tea, nothing happens.

No coffee for me, Jean. Gives me the jitters. In my stomach. And tremor to my hands worthy of an alcoholic on revival. It’s embarrassing. Not the alcoholic. My tremor. A couple of times in my life a spider couldn’t have imitated my signature worse. Awful. So, yes, coffee is a no no for me. Though do love the smell of it. If everyone were like me there’d be no profit in Starbucks. Mind you, I do know people who will have an upper (to get their adrenaline going) later to be followed by a downer. I try not to mess with by body’s chemistry. Self regulate, I say.

I agree, if you have to take uppers and then downers your life is out of whack. I had never heard of a reaction like that to coffee. We are all different! That’s what makes sharing fun.

I usually get up around 4:30 am and by 8:00 am I have finished off my first pot. A little breakfast and then another pot usually finished off by noon. Never have headaches but do have a mild case of tremors which is probably aggravated by the coffee but I am a creature of habit so I don’t see my coffee drinking undergoing any drastic changes until I give up the ghost! 🙂

Usually I drink two cups in the morning. Used to drink lots more but never have had the headaches I’m glad to say.

I remember when I was in grad school and my landlady made a pot in the morning. We would each take a cup and go back to bed to savor while we read. She was a neat lady.

I have had to give away coffee because of the “milk aspect”. Well that is what I suspect the main problem was. I still drink the odd one, hoping that I can manage it.

I have got into “tea” I wouldn’t say through want but by necessity when I’m out and someone either wants to make a drink or buy a drink…that is hot.

I note that when I have hot chocolate out, I have same problem so I’m sure it’s the steamed milk but at home with a dash of milk I’m okay. Not sure what would happen with the coffee and dash at home; as have no coffee on hand…

It had nothing to do with the jitters or headache why I suddenly couldn’t drink it…

My internet is going so slowly tonight that I can’t watch the video. However, I will come back to see it. With my “cluster migraines”, it is really confusing to figure out whether caffeine hurts or helps. Certainly, withdrawal will cause headaches… (so I’m not quitting anytime soon). I’m curious to see the video.

I have about ten cups of coffee a week and it’s never given me a headache. Maybe partly because I don’t like my coffee too strong. But Jenny’s coffee is at least twice as strong as mine and she doesn’t get headaches either. It must be a question of individual tolerance or intolerance.
