I’m not sure I agree with Rat. What do you think?

A good reminder, that every once in a while we need to unplug.
    😉

we had no electricity all day.
i made it to two blogs this morning and then all went dark and black.
just stayed bundled up and read a wonderful book by the window most of the day. luckily had peanut butter and crackers to eat that didn’t need cooking!
and i had made some deviled eggs yesterday. all was good.
    i’m with goat.
except it would have been 29 degrees out there tonight and almost that cold in here. they got it turned back on slightly after dark! so i have heat again.
    and wonderful lamplight!
    and…
    andy’s pictures are so beautiful!!!

Goat’s solution only works if it’s warm outside. I’m glad your electricity came back on before it got too cold inside! We have a gas heater but it doesn’t work if the fan doesn’t have electricity, so we could be in trouble if the electricity went out for too long. Bless the fellows who do the repairs. Our electricity once went out late one night in winter, and I reported it right away because I was concerned about the heat. I was so thankful to see the crew outside with flashlights trying to figure out where the ground fault in one of the underground cables was. It took a couple of hours, but we had electricity and heat by morning.

those guys cannot make enough money in my book monk.
they are out there for us in the most dangerous weather. doing a dangerous job.
they are the true heroes in my book.
and it grates on my every nerve to hear people complain about how LONG it takes! over 30,000 homes were w/o electric due to this ice storm. and those guys are working 24/7.

peanut butter and crackers – doesn’t that resonate with someone who has a peanut as her logo 🙂

sorry you had no power and therefore no heat…hope that doesn’t happen too often.

My mother doesn’t need a power cut to live like “Goat”.

She is the only person I know who doesn’t go near anything vaguely related to computers. And why not? Once upon a time I too lived happily without. Not difficult since the technology wasn’t there – so you didn’t miss it. Light a candle instead. However, I do find it slightly annoying that she won’t even use email. The ones I send to her (naturally via my father – quality control no doubt) he’ll print out for her to read. I sometimes nudge her by mentioning you, Jean, considering that you are closer in age to her than me. To no avail. She admires you but that’s about it. Great, ain’t it? Never mind. In its own way her stance is rather charming. Still … my plea and reasoning that emails are like letters, only typed and sent and received faster, falls on deaf ears. She prefers sitting at her little writing desk penning little missives the old way, putting a stamp on the envelope and taking it to the post box. And you know what? Considering how much pleasure it gives her I’ll probably return the favour by using snail mail. Slightly off topic: Makes you marvel how little effort can have a big impact on someone else’s happiness.

    Rat needs the help!

The internet is a great source of humour, information, support and inspiration (unless you’re being hounded by twitter trolls, that is). But it needs to be kept in its place and not allowed to take over your life. All those offline friends and activities are important too. Especially if the power is cut and the internet is down. I certainly don’t agree with rat.

    • Jean says:

      Anything can be overdone.

What do you do when your power goes out for hours? If it’s because of a storm most people shelter in place.

  7. nick says:

Power outages are very rare in Northern Ireland. I can’t even remember the last one. So the internet is virtually always available.

  8. Cathy in NZ says:

we usually have outages from storms or similar…usually a large tree that decides it would rather be lying down and crashes through some major power route line…

last time a long outage, my flat mate at the time thought he would die of starvation because he was eating same thing day in day out – he didn’t die of course!
