Young Americans are less likely to be homeowners, car owners or parents than their predecessors, but
they do lead in one category: Pets.

Three-fourths of Americans in their 30s have dogs, while 51 percent have cats, according to a survey released by research firm Mintel. That compares to 50 percent of the overall population with dogs, and 35 percent with cats.

The findings come at a time when millennials, roughly defined as the generation born between 1980 and 2000, are half as likely to be married or living with a partner than they were 50 years ago. They are also delaying parenthood and demanding flexible work arrangements — all of which, researchers say, has translated to higher rates of pet ownership.
Millennials are picking pets over people

They agree with Sakura, dogs rock!

I would rather have people AND pets.

I suspect that “cats in the household rule here…although caged birds seem to be quite high” – I have neither now,but I did at one time have a lot of cats.

I was browsing my old tenancy agreement and where it was about “pets” there was a note “one cat only” (and yes we did have a cat then…) Whereas, I think the landlord must have been looking at both agreements, mine as well over the fence…last w/end she said “is that woman over there talking to a cat?” “they are not allowed cats…”

I didn’t particularly reply – those people are not under my agreement…it’s for landlord to take that matter up with them…

When we were in high school we had a parakeet, and Kaitlin had gerbils when she was young. They are fairly easy to take care of, except they’re nocturnal so used their exercise wheel when Kaitlin was trying to sleep. And once one got out and ran around the apartment, chewing holes in things. I still remember when Andy was sleeping late and Frisky ran over his hand which was dangling over the bed. She and I heard a, “Kaitlin!” Andy was not pleased.

this is absolutely the longest I have ever been without a dog.
but after my zeke I just said … “can’t go through losing one again.”
maybe it’s an age thing. or maybe it was just my zeke.
    I don’t know.
but I sure have lots and lots of beloved ‘virtual’ pets! and they mean the world to me.
and the cartoon is quietly hilarious!

Interesting that younger Americans are more likely to have pets. Perhaps because they’re cheaper and less complicated than another human being?

    Makes sense to me!

I will always have a pet.
When I get very old, I will adopt the oldest and most needy pet the shelter has.
(although I many times do that now too! LOL!)
But I will save someone that wouldn’t be saved otherwise and I will treasure them and care for them until their last day and my heart will be broken and then I will do it over again
and over again and over again.
And when the day comes that I can’t care for a pet,
    I hope that’s the day I die.
Not trying to be morose or whatever.
    Just stating facts.
    😉
