New Fire

We could smell smoke in our apartment last night, presumably from the lightning-started fire in the Valles Caldera, about 15-20 miles (I think) northwest of here. The last report said it’s now 426 acres and 100 fire fighters are working on it. Our land doesn’t seem to be in any danger, but Andy continues to work on fire protection.

He’s moved the last of the firewood from the porch and put it in a new log rack he built for it.

We still need to protect the picnic table, probably with some welding blankets.

And he is protecting the buried propane tank and the couple of faucets outside the defensible space with metal:

Prepare the best you can and hope for the best.

i’m so sad that you have to worry about fire “again!”
when I heard that outside Durango is burning and also in NM…
    oh my.
everything crossed here that it will be contained. XOXO

Things are as dry as they were in 2011, when we had our big fire. I’m guessing they will contain this one — there are no fierce winds and we may actually get a bit of rain tomorrow. Yes, fingers crossed.

  2. Andy is such a trooper and if he can avoid anything that is set to destroy his wonderful “day job” then fingers x-ed that all will be well…darn “land/forest fires” 🙁

If we have a fire he will almost certainly lose his fruit trees:

As you can see, the areas around them aren’t cleared out. There isn’t time to do everything.

Absolutely. All the very best to both of you.

I hope the fire is contained and doesn’t get as far as you.

    • Jean says:

It’s still not completely contained even now, but it doesn’t seem to be growing. Two firefighters were injured by a falling tree, but they’ve been released from the hospital and seem to be all right.

  5. All the best to you and Andy. Stay safe, and keep fingers crossed!
