So Much for Those Ideas

In response to yesterday’s post, Kaitlin laughed and reminded us the reason they were coming next weekend instead of their usual Fourth of July trip was because they wanted to wait until the rains had turned the grass green. (We’ll have a good time anyway.)

And Andy and I bought a lot of wildflower and clover seeds this past spring — he was going to sow them once the rains had soaked the soil. We’re still waiting.

The good news is enough rain fell that the Forest Service opened up the forests, which is why Andy was able to take the Cerro Grande walk Wednesday. It could have been a lot worse.

well… since they’re wild flowers maybe you can sow the seeds when the kids are there! and just even the thought of ‘rain soaked soil’ sounds wonderful!
my apartment complex here has cut back on the days their sprinklers run.
they come on at different times after midnight to early morning. in my area it’s from 3am to 3:30am. I used to love hearing them when it was cool enough to have the windows open! they would come on every morning just like a golf course. not now.

The trouble is they need water to germinate and the soil is still dry. “Usually” by now we would have had a lot more rain, but this may be the new normal. Remember all the rain and flash flooding we had right after the fire? We could use a little of that now!

We are luckier. The monsoon has set in well and the problem in some parts of the country is flooding and house collapses!

That’s like poor California. When I was growing up whenever we got much needed rain houses would slide down the hills and be destroyed.

Here’s hoping you get good rain soon. We’re in the middle of our standard dry summer, expect to wait for rain until October. Maybe September.

The amazing thing is that there are no reports of major wildfires in Montana. First time in many years. So once we drive through and past Washington’s fires, and periodic closures of I-90, we hope to have a lovely time at Holland Lake.

We’re having perfect weather. Hot days with a few rainstorms every now and then. We have GREEN! Unfortunately, that green nearly covers the big pond now that new homeowners are “treating” new lawns. The big pond looks more like a meadow but the two smaller ponds, closer to us but further from the new homes, still look like ponds with the accompanying wildlife. Yay for the nature center keeping away construction.

    It’s been HOT here.
    Then it rained.
    This week it’s only 80.
But supposed to warm up again.
    I guess I can’t complain.
(My flowers are doing ok now, although the heat was really hard in them.)
Almost ready for it to be cooler.
    Almost.

It’s 10:30 at night now and 83 F (28 C) on the porch right now. That’s unusually high for this time of year, and not exactly good sleeping weather!
