you’re on ‘the river bottom’ and your little three year old nephew walks up to you and tells you to “close your eyes Tam! I’ve got a s’prise for you!”
thoughts of bugs and small snakes and other things little boys are known for thinking are wonderful cross your mind. you scrunch up your courage and close your eyes and reach out your open hand.
in the palm of your hand is placed a tiny water smoothed pebble.
I still have that little pebble. and that three year old boy is now 43 and has a job that staggers the imagination. he grew up to be a wonderful leader. I’m so proud of him. but truth is… I often still see the tiny boy that gave me the s’prise. it’s my favorite treasure. but if I ever lose it… the memory is indelible.

We have loads of little treasurers dotted around the house, including a tiny wooden Buddha, a small piece of Murano glass we found in a skip on Murano, and a Chinese Bolang Gu. They’re wonderful reminders of people we’ve known and places we’ve visited.

Minimalism isn’t for everyone β€”- little treasures can enrich our lives.

    • Linda Sand says:

Jean, Minimalism means getting rid of the junk so you can better appreciate the treasures. It does NOT mean getting rid of the treasures.

    • Jean says:

      Linda,
Unfortunately some people get carried away and judge other people for having too many treasures. They turn it into a moral matter.

My last comment seems to have disappeared! I had said, “Yes, Chutki.”

The answer is “Yes!” It takes very little space to place a stone here…a pressed flower there…all of them remind me of someone I love!

On the walls of this small apartment we have a painting by my mother, three photos that were part of Dave’s college final, and a gigantic blueprint of the local railroads from the year after we graduated high school. On surfaces we have a Lego model of an RV similar to one we lived in when traveling, and a vase that was a thank you for a time I was able to be there for family. On the piano we have the music from Dave’s performance at the end of piano lessons. And we still have in storage one box of sentimental items like the dress our daughter wore home from the hospital when she was 3 days old. Treasures? To us, yes.
