Cookout

The management replaced our old abandoned swimming pool with a basketball court and a pavilion with picnic tables and gas grills. There were a few parties there last summer, and we were surprised to see a few guys cooking there Monday night. It was about 35°F/1.7°C. They’re a lot hardier than we are now.

On the other hand, I remember a camping trip the three of us took up to the land more than 40 years ago, before we built our first house. It was a clear day and we decided to go up, cook dinner over a campfire, and sleep under the stars.

As we were eating I said, “It’s cold.” Rugged Montana-man Andy said, “It’s not cold!” OK, I was cold, it wasn’t. But as he was eating his lettuce he said, “This lettuce is frozen.” “Yes dear, I told you it was cold.” He said no, it must have gotten frozen in the refrigerator. No, it never went into the refrigerator. It came straight from the store. So he went over to the grove of trees where our thermometer was to prove it wasn’t that cold. When he came back he said, “You’re right. It’s below freezing.”

After dinner I went straight into my warm sleeping bag to look at the stars, and Kaitlin and I chatted and watched them for several hours before we fell asleep. I woke up once in the middle of the night and noticed how much they had moved. Wow!

The next Christmas Andy gave me a super warm parka so I wouldn’t be cold while eating dinner. How sweet was that?

    very sweet indeed!
but the confirmed scientist in him had to have it proved first! “IT” was cold!!! xo

Mom is not a camper, she says she would rather have a comfy bed and some warm jammies:)

Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber

  3. what an adventure that must have been – and Kaitlin was probably cold as well, but with Andy telling everyone to toughen up – guess she wouldn’t have said anything – love how the lettuce was deemed cold and possibly frozen but still the therometer had to prove it was 🙂

i suppose the guys down in your new pavillion were also imbibing liquor of some sort that certainly would mean “not cold down here, folks”…

If they were drinking it wasn’t very much. They were very quiet and we wouldn’t have known they were there if Andy hadn’t seen them when he went down to the laundry room.

The funny thing is now in that Alexa Silver spoof Andy identifies with the gal huddled under all the comforters. “Are you trying to kill me?” How times have changed.

I would not have risked something like that with Urmeela and Ranjan ever!

Did your family have any fun adventures to build lasting memories? If so I’m guessing they had nothing to do with being cold or sleeping under the stars! 😀

Plenty of fun adventures, but nothing as dramatic as sleeping out in the cold.
