Safety Recall

Your vehicle is affected by an URGENT SAFETY RECALL. Your airbag could cause SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. Even a minor crash can cause defective airbags to explode, spraying sharp metal fragments towards drivers and passengers. It is URGENT that you have this defect repaired immediately for FREE for the safety of you and your passengers.

For the past few months Andy has been sent this warning about our 2010 Jeep. Each time he has tried to contact the dealer in Santa Fe but has had no luck in getting to the service department to make an appointment. So Friday he called the national number to get some advice and they suggested he try the dealer in Española (even closer than Santa Fe).

He was going to phone this morning but when we went on the internet last night to get the phone number a fellow in the chat department asked if he could help. Say what?!! Help on Sunday evening?!! We gave him the relevant information, and he said he couldn’t make an appointment because he had to check with the service department to make sure they had the necessary parts, but that they would contact us. We gave him our email address and phone number and will have to see. The Jeep has over 140,000 miles on it and we hope we never have to replace it, but if we do, and if the service department follows through, we know where we will buy our next one!

Have you ever had a product recalled or one that needed a repair under warranty? If so, how did it go?

Update: They did call. We have an appointment for 11 am Wednesday. How cool is that?!

    VERY cool!
the last two cars I’ve had have had recalls that would cause death if not fixed.
I finally got in. and by the time it rained afterwards… there was a LEAK. I have been dealing with it ever since every time it rains. no leak anywhere until I took it to the dealership. after they fixed the recall… they kept contacting me to buy a new one from them. there’s no way I’d have proof that they caused the leak… but it infuriates me. quite a coincidence I’d say.
as far as I’m concerned… cars and car dealerships are a necessary EVIL. I have very little patience with ANY brand or any service center.
    but I’m happy for you!

What a pain! When we bought the Highlander in 2002 we tried to be super-responsible and took it back to the dealer for its first oil change, etc. They managed to put the first ding marks into it. So much for that idea!

Well, it seems like you found a keeper – there actually ARE some good people out there who do what they say they will do.

We have had very few vehicles with recalls, but the dealerships have always been very responsible.

BTW, I am on my third Highlander after two Siennas – I have been very pleased with my experience with Toyota.

    Hope the appointment goes well.

I’ve had only two or three recalls over many years, and the work was carried out very quickly and efficiently (by Renault). Luckily the recalls weren’t for anything life threatening – one was a problem with the support for the open bonnet lid (or hood lid).

I’m glad they weren’t serious. It is a bit scary to receive a notice like the one above, especially because we’ve been driving around with the condition for over nine years.

With three vehicles we have had many recalls over the years. We have always found the dealerships responsible but have occasionally had problems because they couldn’t obtain the necessary part.

Yup. We had an airbag recall on our 2010 Honda CRV. Long after it was fixed under warranty we received another notice for an airbag recall on our 2010 Honda CRV. What? Didn’t we already do that? Sort of. One recall was for the driver’s side; the other recall was for the passenger’s side. Fortunately our local Honda dealer is a good one.

Andy remembers having the driver’s airbag recalled and fixed several years ago. It is strange! His was the most important one because mostly he drives alone.

  6. Diane Dahli says:

If that safety recall is genuine, you could be in danger of having an injury. But if it was as urgent as they say, why isn’t the service easily available? Just doesn’t make sense! Hope you can sort this out soon, Jean!

    • Jean says:

They fixed it this morning, thank goodness. Yes, it doesn’t make sense, especially since they recalled the driver’s air bags a long time ago. Why not both?
