Our Apartment

I can relate to that — we live in a 1000-square-feet, three-bedroom apartment. It isn’t fancy, but it’s an easy walk to downtown, we can see trees from all our windows, we can see the mountains from our porch, our three bedrooms are spacious for the two of us, and it’s easy maintenance. We don’t have to shovel.

It has been my home for over 40 years now, and I love it.

  1. When we lived in Alaska we lived in a condo as well, it had amazing views and I loved it for those same reasons you love your home. There really is no place like home.

  2. somehow I never imagined you lived in 1000 sq ft – let alone 3 bedrooms…or that you had been so long term there. It certainly sounds like a “home” and of course no shovelling a whole lot better…

In late 1974 we lived in a furnished one-bedroom apartment here until our furniture and other stuff arrived. Then we moved into a two-bedroom and lived there for about a year and a half, as I recall, while we waited for a three-bedroom to become available. Kaitlin was young at the time and I wanted a study to work in, so three bedrooms worked better for us. Eventually Kaitlin grew up and the extra space seems luxurious, even though the apartment isn’t fancy.

      How big is your apartment?

  3. it’s 80 m(2) the 2 just about the m. It’s two bedroom, the 2nd bedroom is very small, one small childs bed would probably work. I know the last tenant had 2 kids they wanted a bed each, the door wouldn’t close…so he persuaded them that bunk beds were all the trend!
However, the living room to incorporate dining is quite large…and open plan. The kitchen is minisule as is the laundry. The backdoor is off the kitchen, not the laundry.

The window that opens in laundry doesn’t look onto this property there is a type of dog leg as the back stairs from the other property need to end somewhere…

the other unit is higher off the ground it has under house garaging for 2 cars – therefore their back steps are longer. Whereas we share the same front steps. It’s all very odd…in some ways.

I gather this used to one whole house, which was converted…I know that my end if a lot more modern interior than the other one; but it’s probably still as odd!

the grounds here are my responsibility – as you probably remember I had mowed it for about a year; but now the mower is on sabbatical in the shed, and Kevin comes twice a month – it always looks super when he’s been, as he has a weed eater and a grass blower – then the weeds just shoot up again…

Your place is smaller than this apartment but bigger than the house in the mountains. One of the two bedrooms there is normal size, the other very small.

Wow. I never realized that you’ve lived there all that time.
I guess I thought you lived up on the land until you got burned out.
(Some day I hope to be able to sit down and read every one of your blog posts and fill in the details.)
When I was in my twenties, I lived in several apartments. Some I really liked but most of them, no.
I’ve been in my little house since 1992 and I think I’ll be here until the end.
While I complain about house maintenance, I also love having a yard to putter in and also, of course for my dogs.
The snow is awful but my neighbor bought a new snowblower so the last few times he’s done my sidewalks, etc. too.
I plan on hiring someone to come shovel when I retire, or else I’ll just stay home! Lol!
I have a list of other reasons why I’ll stay here but ultimately it will be cheaper.
And it’s smaller than your place, it’s one and a half stories but it’s only 15 ft wide and 31ft long.

We have been very lucky with neighbors, etc. here. That makes a big difference. And snow isn’t nearly as bad if you don’t have to commute to work every day. Fingers crossed for you about the rest of the winter — it looks as if you will be hit by that cold spell too. Stay safe!

  5. Easy maintenance, no shoveling and a great view sounds like a winner to me

I identify with your feelings about living in a condo. It’s now 13 years since I sold my house, and haven’t regretted it one day—especially when the snow falls!
