Walking Backward for Memory

Can you boost your memory by walking backward?

Apparently in some cases it can happen, but they haven’t figured out why it works.

In the meantime, will walking backward help boost your short-term memory? “This study would suggest that there are some circumstances where this might be the case,” says Dr. Schacter. “It may be worth trying.”

When I walk into a room and forget why I’m there, if I just stand there for a bit the answer usually comes. If it doesn’t I will go back to the place where I was when I decided I needed something. But if that happens again, I’ll try walking backward and see if it helps — an easy and fun experiment.

agreed. except be very careful walking backwards into something! ๐Ÿ˜€

  2. could have merits, as long you walk forward first, knowing the obstacles you could encounter on the way “back” …. or even how far back you can go

Interesting concept. I’ll have to give it a try some time

  4. My dog must have a great memory. He walks backward all the time. I guess we’ve been doing that trick all wrong.

I hadnโ€™t heard this before. Think maybe โ€œoldstersโ€ might need to take care doing this. Interesting to test out though.
