A New Greenhouse?

In the fall of 2016 we started making plans to build a greenhouse between the shed and the house. Fortunately for contractors, unfortunately for us, things were booming down here in 2017 and 2018, so we had to put the plans on hold. Understandably, no one is interested in the hassle of going up to our place when they have better offers down here.

Things have changed, and now Joe, the contractor who built our house, is interested, and we’re finalizing the drawings with Florian, the greenhouse manufacturer.

One neat thing is Florian emailed the detailed drawings as a PDF file, and Andy and Steve, our architect, had our local copy center print the plans out on standard 2 feet X 3 feet paper. Yes, people do that all the time, I’m sure, but I still think it’s a modern miracle to do it so quickly and not have to rely on sending things back and forth via snail mail. I don’t take things like that for granted.

WOW! I didn’t realize you had such plans.
do you think Andy is hoping you guys will live there full time?
it seems like he’s planning big! πŸ™‚ xo

No, it was Kaitlin and Torben’s idea. They wanted one eventually and thought if they built it sooner Andy could play with it too. And it makes sense to use his great expertise. A win-win.

  2. Greenhouses are fun. I used to work at a florist with 4 acres under glass greenhouses and always wanted a small one at home. It will be fun following your experience building yours.

  3. Love to see as it progress. My oldest son talk about doing a green house.
    Coffee is on

  4. this is going to be fun…I’m pretty sure Andy has “plans” in place as we each type a reply…will it be heated?

    • Jean says:

It’s supposed to extend the growing season, but won’t be heated in winter. If it gets built (we’re realistic enough to know that things can go wrong) the first thing he will do is to install data loggers to see how the temperature varies.

Oh a greenhouse would be fun. Of course for me with no green thumb it would be more of a brown house.
When I think back on how far we’ve come with technology in my life time I find it simply amazing.

So why a greenhouse exactly? Are you planning to grow more of your own fruit and veg?

    • Jean says:

Kaitlin and Torben are thinking about doing that in the distant future. They figured if we built it now Andy could have some fun with it.

He originally said he has so many other things to do he wouldn’t have much time to use it, maybe some tomato plants. But last night when I asked him if he would plant some tomatoes if it gets built, he said, it would be too late for tomatoes this year, he thought maybe some lettuce and radishes. So he is clearly looking forward to it. Fingers crossed it all works out.

Mom would love to have a small greenhouse, but we have to deal with association rules:( We can’t wait to see the finished project. Bet it will be really nice.

Unfortunately associations can be a pain at times. We’ll have to see how it goes, I will keep you informed. πŸ™‚

    A greenhouse!
Oh that sounds great! I would love one myself to start flowers in.
That’s definitely something to look forward to.
