Notpla (Not Plastic)

An athletic event as large as the London Marathon is sure to create some waste, but these edible seaweed drink capsules are hoping to combat this, offering a waste-free solution that hydrates the runners.

… Once discarded, the seaweed-based wrapping will decompose in about the same amount of time as fruit does, which is typically between four to six weeks.

A company called Skipping Rocks Lab provided the capsules, and the material, made of biodegradable plant material, is called Notpla. The company also makes biodegradable condiment packets and water- and grease-proof linings for cardboad takeaway boxes.

I wish them well!

  2. I think that has be totted as a way to help the elderly drink more as well…but I think it’s actually like a sweetie and you can eat the packaging (????) but yes sounds like a great idea for big events like marathons…

It will be interesting to see if they make a go of it, but at least they’re trying. I’m guessing other ideas will pop up too because a lot of potential customers are concerned about the problem.

you’re right. most encouraging! maybe it will even lead to the masses who frequent our beautiful wildlife national parks. if they’re going to have to leave a trail of trash… at least this turns into trash that follows the natural law of decomposing! I think there are some wonderfully brilliant minds addressing the problems of today!

  7. I love how companies and individuals are jumping on the bandwagon to clean up the invironment and make things that are earth friendly.

It’s great that all sorts of plastic substitutes are now being developed, and it won’t be long before plastic itself will be used less and less. About time too, as the harm being caused to marine animals that ingest plastic is colossal and inexcusable.

    • Jean says:

Yes, a lot of people are aware of the harm being done, that’s why there will be a big market for alternatives.

  9. Linda says:

I guess I’m in a bad mood today because my focus in those pictures was on the plastic gloves.

    • Jean says:

On the other hand, those gloves should cause a lot less trouble than all the bottles would. And there is no reason they can’t come up with biodegradable gloves — they are just getting started.
