The Media

I partially agree with that. Fortunately if we look we can get information about the bigger picture of what is going on in the world. We’re not nearly as limited as we were years ago.

What do you think?

my experience with facebook is limited since I only joined once for about 48 hours! but I understand the drift of your question. the world is smaller than it’s ever been. and I think that might be a good thing. it might make us care more about our fellow humans and animals. and I have friends now that I never would have known otherwise!
I do love the internet. I can pursue interests I might never have known I have. and I can do so at my own pace and leisure. I still watch our local news.
the weather here is so changeable. especially in the springtime. I’ve thought of going without the tv but for safety’s sake I would/should always keep it I think.

I’m not a huge fan of Facebook but it has some really good points and is much more than just conversation.
In fact, there’s more news there than the actual news. The “24 hour News” or any major news channel only cares about sharing the “popular” stuff.
Example, no one seems to be reporting that people are dying in floods in Africa. Tragic stuff going on there but the big news channels don’t care about it or report about it.
But Facebook has people spreading the news. They find something and share the hell out of it and suddenly people know.
They also share small local stuff.
Example, someone’s dog got out and they share it and someone they know, knows someone in that area and they share it to that friend and then there’s a chain of people who don’t know each other but they find the dog.
But it does have good conversation at times. Once I was watching a late night show and commented on it on Facebook and my friend in Florida comments back and then someone in Wisconsin and then my sister in Vermont… and more people were jumping in and it was rather fun! Who would have ever thought it would be possible to carry on a running commentary with people all over the country as we laughed about a tv show.
LOL! I love the Internet too!

That’s great that Facebook works so well for you. I haven’t been that lucky, so I stick to blogging and good journalism. The main thing is we have so many choices nowadays.

  3. I’m not a fan of Facebook but I go there everyway to catch up family photos. Unfortunately you see sides of people you wish you hadn’t and it changes how you think about them. It’s different than conversation where you can see how others react to what you are saying.

Clearly some people have more positive interactions on Facebook than you and I do, the main thing is we can find things that work for us.

  4. I’m a f/b fan – for the “connections” that I have: friends, various activities, family, some folk that I could easily ditch, especially those who do not read/look properly at what I posted – usually a photo with description…and some of those people are supposedly creatives!

I’m trying more to post on my art f/b page rather than elsewhere…more words/story on what is going on. Like today – issues with the new notebooks…I don’t even know what I changed with the covers but I’ve had to ditch them – hadn’t sewn in the innards.

I’ve learnt heaps from uTube especially since I got into making the “books” – I have certain crafters that I like, and they provide me with the tools, or even at times “what I should have done…” I usually watch a couple on the same matter to find the one that works for me.

my blogspot site is only for art/craft – whereas my w/press site is for anything inc art/craft…

I also love the rest of the Internet…so much to see and do. And right now, I came online – I had thought of something I must do…finally got here, but to clear some room – and now I can’t remember what for…well, it’s time to take a break, anyway…

Well I can’t remember the last time I watched the news. I do check Facebook but only because I find it entertaining sometimes. Of course I’ve also read plenty on there that has annoyed me too not to mention the things that I just didn’t need to know about…lol

I stopped using my FB account almost immediately after opening it as ceased to trust Zuckerberg as genuinely interested in user privacy.

I think everywhere we get a lot of macro national and world news — rapidly, but I think local news distribution in so many communities is much less and has become virtually non-existent in too many areas of this nation. I consider our community to be lucky our city newspaper still exists with good coverage of important local issues though they decreased publishing frequency to once weekly in order to survive. I’m concerned that watchdog and investigative press on local government which is so vital simply is not as prevalent.

I asked this question about where people got there news on my blog recently because of my concern. I think only one person described a source that would have provided local news specifically. There’s so much other so-called news I wonder if people even realize what they’re missing.

Our local news sucks. They’ve dropped down to three days a week and doesn’t have much news at all, and nothing investigative. 🙁
