The Power of Puppy Eyes

Synchronicity? The Economist this week has an article entitled Pets have gained the upper paw over their so-called owners. The subtitle is Humanity oppresses many wild and farmed animals. But its pets have it on a short leash.

Among other things it says,

People still assume that pets must be working for humanity in some way, perhaps making people healthier or less anxious. But the evidence for that is weak. Rather, new research suggests that canines have evolved those irresistible “puppy-dog eyes” precisely to manipulate human emotions. It has worked. The species that once enslaved others now toils to pay for the care of its pets, which lounge on the sofa waiting to be taken to the grooming salon. Sentimental Americans often refer to themselves not as cat-owners but as the cat’s “mommy” or “daddy”. South Koreans go one further, describing themselves as cat “butlers”, pandering to every feline whim. Watch a hapless dog-walker trailing “his” hound, plastic bag in hand to pick up its mess, and you have to wonder: who’s in charge now?

It’s a fun article, with some truth to it.

    It’s true.
I work so that my pets can have a comfortable life. LOL!
I placed my monthly “Chewy” order today and it rivals my utility bill.
I never go to the doctor myself but I have an EKG scheduled for Monday
    for my little dog Twinkle.
    I’m definitely my dogs servant!
    But that’s ok with me.
My life might be stressful and exhausting at times
but thankfully I have my fur kids to come home to.
    They make it all worthwhile.
    😀

  2. Levi did something a few days ago and I said right out loud, “You’ve sure got me trained, don’t you.” He’s as important in my life as any two legged kids would be…says the lady who never had any children. 🙂

Yes, I do believe it’s true. They have enslaved us and we are helpless LOL

  4. and there now seem to be more retail opportunities for animals, not just dogs…along with what they “need to eat” marketed in smart packaging; specialised leads, harnesses and of course “coats”.

At one time in my life, I had a lot of cats (3-6)- and like Cindi their “meat” bill was much larger than ours…I would be getting 5kgs of one type of meat, then I fed them other meats that had to be cooked. Sometimes, I would cooking their stuff, more than mine. Then there came the new fad “biscuits” apparently more convenient…oops whole cupboard full of boxes!

I guess we always owned our cats. I remember being grateful for Meow Mix because it came in single serving packets so I didn’t have to deal with canned food. We did teach our first kitten to walk on a leash and ride in the car because we knew we would be moving from Alabama to Minnesota when it was only a few months old and we wanted it to not drive us nuts on that trip. Once we got past the new kitten shots we never made another trip to the vet and we certainly never bought them coats. They were pets not kids. Although, we did buy that kitten plain vanilla ice cream when we stopped at DQ in our travels. 🙂
