Strange Rash

As I was about to shut my computer down for the night Tuesday, Andy came out and said he had a rash. It itched so much he couldn’t sleep. It was all over him so we checked the internet to make sure he shouldn’t go to the emergency room, but it didn’t seem that dangerous, so he took an Ambien and managed to get some sleep.

The interesting thing is when he went to the walk-in clinic yesterday he found that a lot of other people had the same thing! We have no idea what’s causing it, but the doctor had no problem diagnosing Andy. The first thing he said was, “You’re as red as a lobster.” He prescribed five days of prednisone and a month of over-the-counter antihistamine. Fingers crossed it works with no serious side effects.

We’re curious about what has caused the outbreak, but the nurses and doctors didn’t seem to be interested in that. They just treat things, which is fine as long as their method works!

treating it and not knowing where it came from is not good I would think.
why couldn’t they make a short list of questions and then see if anything matched. if it didn’t… fine. but if everyone ate at a certain place or bought food there… or whatever. interesting for sure. I DO hope there’re no side effects.

Doctors aren’t scientists and they already have their hands full treating patients. I wouldn’t like to be a doctor.

I would think that if there are a lot of people coming in with the same thing they would want to find out what’s causing it . Hope what they gave him clears it up

Even if they were set up to look into it, it probably wouldn’t be worth it — the rash doesn’t seem to be serious. Yes, fingers crossed it’s cured quickly.

Could it be some sort of pesticide or herbicide that’s being sprayed in the area?

    • Jean says:

We haven’t heard of any, but that doesn’t prove anything. And the majority of people aren’t having any problems.

  4. it sounds like the sort of thing Nick has said…it has to be something widespread for it to affect a “people range” –

Hope your “lobster mate” gets to be paler real soon…

We hope that rash disappears as quickly as it came and that it isn’t contagious!

Trust the rash goes away. I, too, think, especially if a number of people are having a similar rash, that some sort of effort should be made in the medical community to determine a cause and/or or report to a central location info about it with pictures. The meds being prescribed aren’t low key minor antidotes.

Yes, prednisone scares me. A doctor tried to put me on the pill form once because he thought I had asthma. I declined and went to another doctor. I used the ointment when I had shingles in my left eye, but I was nervous about it. It worked out fine.

As a toddler, our daughter’s rash turned out to be an allergic reaction to a virus. She was in the hospital for a week while they determined that but she felt fine by day two taking allergy medicine. She was their test case; other kids came in but were discharged while they kept her since she was the first. She was in the isolation ward but she became the pet of the nurses since she felt fine. Andy might be glad they didn’t keep him until they decided the cause instead of just treating the symptoms.

  8. Thanks for stopping by the furbabes blog and leaving a sweet comment. Rash…I have such terrible sensitive skin, pollen lands on it a certain time of the year and I will end up with scratches and sores all over me. I like having an issue treated but I am one of those folks that wants to know what it is, what caused it and why did it jump on me!!?

I agree with the others, I think they should ask some questions before treating it. What if it’s something that he keeps exposing himself to?
I once used a liquid fabric softener and it made me so dizzy I could barely stand. It took me a while to figure it out and I kept putting the sweatshirt on that had been washed in it. I’d have it off and start feeling good then I’d get cold and pull it on again and almost fall over. I googled fabric softeners and apparently it’s happened to a lot of people!
Anyway, I hope his rash is gone soon! I currently getting over poison ivy and it’s horrible to itch so bad!

I think we need to figure out for ourselves what the cause is. Andy hadn’t eaten or done anything differently but the doctor and nurse weren’t interested. Anyway, he no longer itches and the rash is getting lighter, so fingers crossed when he stops the prednisone.

I’m glad you figured out what your reaction was, and good luck with the poison ivy!.
