Falling Apart

All sorts of things have been falling apart. First Andy noticed there was light coming through the top of his pith helmet/hard hat:

A few days before he had banged his head on the shovel of one of the machines up there, but he didn’t notice any symptoms so he forgot about it.

Then we discovered the jam he has been having for breakfast every morning for about the past 20 years has been discontinued.

And finally, Saturday evening the latch that holds the battery of his precious little camera broke. What?!! We rely that camera for so many of the pictures he takes for this blog. We temporarily fixed it with duck tape, but that clearly is not a long-term solution.

The pith helmet was no problem. We had bought it from Amazon so it was easy to simply reorder it.

We searched the internet for other tart cherry jams/preserves and ordered some possible replacements. We did find one he liked, so that problem has been solved.

And I spent quite a few hours his weekend looking for a tiny camera that might replace his old one. The picture quality of them is never excellent, but the camera has to be small and lightweight and easily fit in his pocket with his glasses. We chose one last night and it should be here Wednesday so we can test it. Fingers crossed.

Again, bless the internet!

I completely agree, bless the Internet

  2. it’s always the little but semi important things that break…some we are attached to “the jam” for one but others maybe a newer variety will surface and it turns out to the VIP in our lives…

I can’t imagine eating the same brand of jam for breakfast for 20 odd years…but I suppose it’s easier than trying to make a new decision each grocery day.

I know I miss the brand of boot that I could get…still can, but they changed the model components; which meant I had to change brands…I’m not happy with the new pair, even though I’ve had them at least 6 months…

Andy likes his food to be predictable. I can understand that — I’m that way about clothes. As you say, it saves a lot of time. We were luckier with finding a new jam for him than you were finding boots you like. Little things like that can make a difference.

I am one that blesses the internet, specially Amazon prime. When I was down with my accident, it saved me so much. I started ordering some items there and have kept on ordering cause it is so covenient. I hope you have good luck with the camera.

  4. I love Amazon, too.

There are several small batch places in upper Michigan that make tart cherry jam. I think you’ll find a replacement. The most popular one I know about is American Spoon. https://www.spoon.com/sour-cherry-preserves.html

Thanks for the suggestion, and we’ve already found a new one that he likes: Smucker’s Natural Red Tart Cherry Fruit Spread. It’s the same brand, they just changed their products some. The nice thing is it’s easy to get.

Oh I hate when a product you love gets discontinued. Glad you were able to replace everthing.
Does Andy carry a cell phone with him? A lot of the phones these days take excellent pictures.

    • Jean says:

We don’t have smart phones because we have poor reception up there and they would be a waste of money for us. Torben gave me his old iPhone 7 Plus and it takes better pictures than our point-and-shoots — I can transfer pictures via WiFi — but Andy needs something very small and easy to use. Picture quality isn’t as important as that. The most important thing is that he takes the pictures.

trouble comes in threes. I’ve heard that I think. if I’m remembering it correctly.
I’m so glad he had that helmet on when he hit his head! it’s an important thing to wear where he is up on the land! and glad he found his jam.
maybe the new camera will be even better than the old one. (glass 1/2 full you know!) lol.

    • Jean says:

Yes, he’s getting good about wearing his hard hat!

We’ll see tomorrow if we found a camera that works for him — we’re trying two and he will compare them.

Some day those words will be writ in stone: God Bless Amazon Prime!

    • Jean says:

Although the new jam comes from Walmart because it’s way too expensive at Amazon. I do love Amazon but am glad Walmart is trying to give it competition.

I would say it is coming to him in THREES. I so dislike when that happens.
