Defensible Space

Andy took this picture to show Kaitlin the extent of our defensible space (trees and bushes cut down for fire protection). It shows up nicely in the snow.

Here’s a zoomed version, unfortunately a cloud cast a shadow over our house and greenhouse.

the snow really does make a difference in how it shows up! it looks good.

It was prettier when we had trees, but they were getting overgrown and then the drought came. It has a different, starker beauty now, and spectacular views. 🙂

  2. You guys are really isolated up there! Mountains are pretty though.

Next question, no, make that two questions. Do you stay there at all in the summer or spring or fall? And how far is it from where you live? This place sure calls to me! I get such a feeling when I look at it pictures of this area.

I understand your reaction — the view from the road across from our place just blows me away at times, especially in the low light of winter after we’ve had some snow.

I go up for picnic suppers, Andy goes up every day he can. It’s about an hour drive, half of it on rough dirt roads. Kaitlin, Torben and the pups stay up there when they come, assuming they don’t get snowed out like last winter. We have our fingers crossed because they’re hoping to come around New Years.

We bought the land in 1976, so it was an important part of Kaitlin’s childhood. We have all sorts of memories of working together as a family up there. That’s why we decided to stay and rebuild after the fire. It’s special to us.

the second photograph is very beautiful thanks to the shade of these clouds

Thank you for coming by. I’m impressed by the pictures on your site and I love the fact that you translate into different languages. Andy and I lived in Orsay, France for 13 months years ago, and I went to Paris very often. But my French is very poor now!

That shows up well in the snow. What a great place to go to get away from it all.

It is apparent I need time to go back through all your blog…I do not know about a fire…or if I do I have forgotten it. But I think I would remember that.
