The Years Go by, as Quickly as a Wink

The family that has owned and operated our local department store for the past 40 years has received an offer that was too good to refuse. Who is buying the store and what will replace it is still a mystery.

Anyway, I was surprised that they were selling, that the son isn’t going to keep the store going. I remembered buying our sofa from him, and he seemed fairly young at the time. Then I saw a video of him talking about the change (on the site of our free local paper), and he was a middle-aged man. Hmm. Well, as I thought about it more, we did by the sofa about 25 years ago.

I laughed when I told Andy, and we both remembered the lyrics,

Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think.

We’re not nearly as “in the pink” as we used to be, but we’re still enjoying ourselves. At our age, that’s our main job.

Time seems to pass more quickly the older we get – that’s what Mom says. We are trying to get Mom back feeling at least a little in the pink.

I suppose you have heard/read this:

    Twell’s Original Version[5]
When as a child I laughed and wept,
    Time crept.
When as a youth I waxed more bold,
    Time strolled.
When I became a full grown man,
    Time RAN.
When older still I daily grew,
    Time FLEW.
Soon I shall find, in passing on,
    Time gone.

It’s true. and when I’m occupied with something I love…
it goes by in a flash. I think “where has the time gone?!!!”
    a fun ride!

  4. JeanR. says:

Ohmygosh, that sure is true. If only we could role back a decade or two.

  5. I’ve got some duds in my wardrobe that I would bought many decades ago…most them are a bit beyond “best” but whenever I have them on, it reminds me that in 19xx I bought this, occasionally I can remember where. Which reminds me, I bought one of the now “paint wear” tops from Shirleys. And Shirley is still retailing in Blockhouse Bay – I bought some better duds from her a couple of years ago…

I don’t like to shop, so I buy my clothes online and order several of them at a time. They last and last and I don’t have to worry about what to wear.

  6. Ann Thompson says:

That is so true. I don’t know how many times I’ve thought that something occured only a few weeks ago only to find out later that it was months or even a year or so ago.

  7. MadSnapper says:

this song is so true, we both constantly talk about how fast life is going and when we saw our pastors son, whom we last saw 20 years ago when we left that church, he is now 30 years old and not a child. we thought it was 5 years not 20..

  8. Linda Sand says:

“our main job” YES!!! Still having trouble not feeling guilty about that, though.

    • Jean says:

I don’t feel guilty because I worried about my mother and wanted her to be happy. I figure the best gift Andy and I can give Kaitlin is to stay happy and healthy as long as possible. So she doesn’t have to worry about us, and also so she can see life is still worth living when people get old.

Hugh Prather in Notes on How To Live in the World and Still Be Happy asked, is it selfish to try to be happy? His conclusion was no, it was the only way he knew to be kind. There’s a lot of truth in that.

  9. Joared says:

Why not enjoy ourselves as best we can despite whatever might challenge us otherwise? It’s all up to each of us, individually. No one can do it for us.
