Problems With Comments

Nick and Ann told me that their comments weren’t appearing, so I eventually had the sense to check my spam folder. Sigh, it wasn’t just theirs, some others were there too. So I marked them as not spam and will answer them. I’ll also try to check that folder more often.

I’m surprised it took me so long to figure out what the problem was, because it had happened before. Thank you for letting me know, Nick and Ann!

Several of the real spam comments were by the same person, one example being:

you boomers are shutting down the entire economy because you’re afraid of a flu. Seriously, can you boomers kill yourselves? You are the most selfish generation to ever exist. You don’t give a s**t about climate change, why should we young people give a s**t if you get sick and die of some virus? I HOPE the virus gets much stronger and kills you all.

Needless to say, I left them as spam. Has anyone else had comments like that?

  1. no spam with my free account…I found a pending (feb) but I’d dealt with earlier…

I’ve so many things I want to say here…but then again what’s the point. Because if we are all gone, so will he/she pretty soon – cause there won’t be all that experienced business owners, retailers to serve him/her…

What I’ve been seeing not here, but mainly on other social media is kind of similar quack nonsense. Also in real time, talking my ex-dh I realised he hasn’t taken much in and he’s not even got a computer/internet – he does use the library’s but of course libraries all closed here!

    • I believe data shows it’s more the younger generation in trouble with this…whereby the majority of the boomer generation is more savvy on how to keep safe…

Illinois and Massachusetts started the stringent social distancing rules because of the big crowds of young adults trying to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. In spite of the warnings.

That’s a good point about people who don’t read the news or use social media.

That is the same kind of comments I have been getting every day now for four or five days, though the first one I got was even worse than this. It was 3 paragraphs long just full of hate. and though I don’t want to say it in a comment here, it also mentions some other stuff that really makes me wonder about them and their sanity. Mine always come up under Anonymous.

One of mine by “her” (Amanda) was four paragraphs long. And yes, full of hate. The reason I mentioned it was because you said you were moderating all comments now. The way my site is supposed to work is I moderate the first comment from a person. If I approve the comment then subsequent comments automatically get approved.

I don’t understand why long-term commenters are sometimes classified as spam, but it’s easily fixed when I remember to check. Which I will try to do.

  3. Catalyst says:

Oh, yeah. That same one spread mindlessly by a bot. I just kill it and ignore it.

  4. Ann Thompson says:

I’m bad about checking my spam folder and when I do I usually find one or two that doesn’t belong there. I’ve seen that comment about boomers on other blogs but haven’t gotten one myself.

  5. MadSnapper says:

yes, I have had this same spammer on my site twice. so glad you found the problem. I will check mine now. I forget to look at it. I use feedly to read blog posts. just now from feedly when I clicked on your post it came up and said certericate error, leave this sight immediately. I went out and went to your blog by URL and go nothing.. spammers are using this scare to attack, my email is full of emails trying to take our info and money. I suggest to all if you don’t know the person delete it and also don’t click reply to any thing that appears to be from your bank or other accounts. I got twice an email saying they had locked my Spectrum account to fill out the verify info to get it unlocked. the funny thing was I was ON the spectrum checking my email.. I am not clicking on anything. I check what ever they say is wrong by going to the webstie

    • Jean says:

I’m careful about spammers too! I’ve gotten several warnings about service about to be discontinued, but when I check the email address (easy to do in AOL without opening the message) I can tell that’s it’s a fake. And like you, I try to go to the site directly rather than clicking on the link when I do open a message. Thanks for warning everyone.

    I’m speechless.
and for ME that’s something! 🙂
I had no idea this was going on. it’s the first in awhile that I’ve heard of it.
and there I was thinking this terrible time might bring the world together.
and we would wake up and try to fix it all. or at least work on it with good hearts and intentions. robots of HATE? good grief.
    ever the Pollyanna.

Some people reach out and try to build a better world, some people reach out to try to destroy things.

Colbert King, a columnist for the Washington Post, wrote a piece describing Trump’s chaotic response to the pandemic, and a commenter wrote,

I hope u get it and soon pass away

King handled it well, he wrote,

That reader may receive his wish.

I fall into the category of people most likely to suffer serious illness or even death from covid-19. I am over 60 (80, to be precise) with an underlying medical condition; I have been treated for pulmonary embolism, and clots remain in my lungs.

If Trump’s approach to this deadly infectious disease proceeds in the direction it seems headed, it’s possible that my days might come to an end. (I’ll pause until the cheering dies down.)

      Now, let’s go on.

He went on to say he was going to do his best to wash his hands and isolate himself so he won’t contribute to spreading the virus and be a burden to his family and the health care system. And he will keep pounding on his typewriter producing more columns.

      Good for him!

I read that horrible post slamming boomers on another blog. The haters will come out, no matter what is going on in the world. This is a time for compassion, not hate.

  8. Harold says:

The trolls and bots are out in force and once they find your site it tends to mess things up for a while. I have gone back to moderating all comments and requiring everyone to use a Google account, which I hated to do, but for a while until this round of bots are cleansed, it just seemed prudent. I went through this same thing on Blogger a few years ago and it was a reason why I stopped using it back then. I would hate to have to do it again, because I like Blogger and the community that I becoming a part of here.

    • Jean says:

Mostly my spam plugin works in weeding out the haters, but it sometimes gets confused about regular commenters. I don’t know if my firewall helps — I got hacked a few years ago so have a good security system with Securi.net. Blogging is a big part of my life so it’s worth it to have help.

  9. Linda Sand says:

Hmmm. Guess I should go check my spam file.
