well I’m not sorry – I found a packet in the back of the pantry cupboard last Friday – and I’ve it made up in the fridge. I’ll be finished it today “part of lunch”
I don’t have the packet details but maybe I can find a link from online supermarket…
I wouldn’t say I was a full on fan- but I do suddenly have the urge to get a few, then suddenly I go off them…they are nice to add to a fruit salad, and they are one of the chief ingredients if you’ve going to make a trifle.
I used to make lots of trifles, not so much now…the kind with a canned fruit encased jelly, sponge cake/preferably a few days old, soak a bit of either sherry or fruit juice through it – leave that to set. Add a thick custard which also should be set, then whipped cream on top with sprinkle of say passionfruit syrup.
me today: work with the box cake mix. Long process as it’s been a while since I did anything like bake a cake. Found my lovely white china baking bowl, yesterday located the beater “sticks” for the beater, cut a piece of baking paper to size, for the pan I found that should work…now I’m heating the oven. I will start on the cake mix in a short while…have no idea what it will look like, but instructions seem easy…
We always have Jello in the cupboard. Mom makes it every couple of months. Here is a very funny story from her days as a child. The local radio station had a contest where they would call you on the phone and instead of saying hello, the recipient of the call had to say the name of a food. Her mother got a call once and when the radio host said,”Oh, sorry, you don’t win because you didn’t say the name of a food.”, her mother said, “Wait a minute, I said Jello, not Hello.” The host believed and she won some little prize. Mom says the whole family still gets a big chuckle out of that story.
As jello it was never a favorite…BUT, give me a container of cottage cheese, crushed pineapple, coolwhip and a box of strawberry jello…then you’re talking a bit of heaven in a bowl.
Also, one of my favorite dishes used to be cottage cheese and canned pineapple chunks. It’s been years, but maybe I should try it again for old times sake.
it was a cheap dessert, mother almost always put fruit in it. all different kinds. I use one box of jello every week. I use sugar free lime or black cherry. I make my husband jello fluff. one container of large curd cottage cheese, jello, one container cool whip, one large can chorused pineapple and he eats one bowl every night for dinner. low cal, low fat, low sugar and it helps his sweet tooth. I can eat it because aspartame makes my brain spaced out. I still love jello but gave up sugar and aspartame. the kind in the video, the ready to eat is just plain nasty. I only like the one I mix myself.
Debbie Downer Alert here!…..
First, when I was a kid, I liked jello pie.
I think it had fruit and cool whip mixed into it? and poured into a graham cracker crust.
But years later, after my Dad remarried, we were forced to eat βjelloβ as an almost nightly dessert served with dinner and most times it was watery and not set. Ick.
Years later though, I enjoyed a Jello Shot or two but….
(Hereβs the big downer part) when I found out how jello is made, I NEVER had it again.
Gggggag.
I have fond memories of jello!
but I haven’t eaten it in years. too much sugar.
I still have warm memories of it. I used to have a sweet tooth, so Jello was a great dessert for people counting calories.
It used to be they would give it to you in the hospital as the first food you could eat.

Good to know it still has its fans! π

Woos, Lightning and Timber
That’s a great story, and it make me happy that you still use Jello. π

I still remember Jello salads with crushed pineapple and shredded carrots. And other salads and desserts using it. π
Also, one of my favorite dishes used to be cottage cheese and canned pineapple chunks. It’s been years, but maybe I should try it again for old times sake.
I still eat jello every week.
Hurray for that!
I still eat jello but not as often as I used to. I did just make some last week with some fruit in it.
It sure has an interesting history.
I think it’s best loaded with fruit.
Jean, Roger loves cottage cheese and pineapple or peaches…and my nephew liked cottage cheese with tomatoes.
I’m going to have to buy some cottage cheese again. It’s been a long time!

That sounds like a great dessert for your husband. I’m with you about the ready-to-eat, but like you I’ve given up sugar and eat fresh fruit instead.
mother made horrible jello salads with shredded carrots UCK
If she didn’t put crushed pineapple in it I can understand why you didn’t like it. π

I stopped making it years ago, but for a completely different reason. Life is constantly changing. π
I’ve never tasted it. I don’t think it’s ever been available in the UK.
That never occurred to me. Thanks for the information. π
I suspect you have Nick…it’s a staple ingredient in a Trifle and it was your own Mrs Beaton who introduced it to the world…google images for Mrs Beatons Jellies… and then here she is in Victorian Britain…https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mrs_Beeton%27s_Book_of_Household_Management
