Newspapers and Other Media

In 1852 Henry David Thoreau started reading a weekly newspaper, but he gave it up because it distracted him from his life and work. His attention was too valuable to waste.

That makes me smile, but I’m not about to emulate him. I love reading about what’s going on in the world… I love history and we’re going through momentous times. I’m not about to miss this part of it.

  1. I wax and wane on news – I rather like “good news” but then I also need to know the “summary” of something not good. And at the moment “not good” is in the forefront…

Not good because of people bringing in the virus? At least you have a PM who believes it’s a problem. Good luck! We could use a lot of that too. 😀

I agree. I have to know what’s going on in the world around me, I can’t just shut it out. Especially now during the pandemic lockdown when the media is one of the things that keeps us in touch with other people and the rest of the planet.

I’ve never been one to read the newspaper. Wade was always the one to fill me in on all the news.

  4. I feel the same way about not wanting to miss what is going on.

I prefer to read my news and read it online. I have breaking news that comes in to my Feedly and I checked through the one liners to find out if it’s something I want to read about. And when Bob tells me something that he saw on TV then I look it up and read about it if I’m interested. For me I like reading because I can pick and choose if I try to watch the news on TV every channel is telling the exact same thing and none of it I’m interested in. That all the channels 10 to say the same thing over and over and over. But I do like to keep up with what’s going on

We don’t have TV, but it doesn’t make any difference. I’m with you, I like being able to pick and choose what news I get. That’s one reason I love the internet.

  6. Andrea says:

Can you even imagine what Thoreau would say about people’s addiction these days to the internet & their cell phones? Lordy…. he’s probably turning over in his grave at this very moment! Love, Andrea xoxo

    • Jean says:

He would be even more appalled at what’s happening to the environment. He was upset by that even during his own times. 🙁

Judy gets most of her news from television (and an occasional Sunday New York Times). I get most of mine on-line. We stay pretty well informed, I think.
