As I was sorting and deleting my gazillion emails (I’m almost done), I learned about American foulbrood — a devastating threat to honeybees — and the dogs people are training to detect it. Here’s an article about how the dogs do it, and here’s a National Geographic video of one of the first dogs to be trained.
I’m now off to deal with the few remaining emails. Cheers!

cheers for the job Monk! it will be so good when it’s done. 😀
and that beautiful black lab is a winner and an important girl for sure!
it’s interesting and important about the bees. thanks. xo
Thanks. 🙂
It is amazing what dogs can do with those noses. KB of Romp and Roll has trained R and Shyla to do nose tracking. We know that dogs can also detect when a person with epilepsy is going to have a seizure. Incredible talent.
I agree, it’s amazing.
I will watch the video later…just have to say you have got me thinking I need to work on email. It will never be really gone. I have emails I would never delete. Emails from people that have sense passed away. But I do need to work on it.
I save a lot of old emails…I just put them in separate folders so I can go back and reread them when I want to. They don’t clutter the inbox, and they’re easier to find.
I am all about finding ways to protect and save our pollinators – And of course training dogs to detect American foulbrood makes perfect sense! I have friends that have hives, it’s hard work and dedication and they have lost hives because of one thing or another, and I know they hope this research is successful too.
The bees are threatened by a lot of things. It’s scary.
How interesting! Dog sure can be trained to do a lot of useful things, can’t they.
Yes. 🙂
the owner sure cares for his dog’s mental and phyiscal health, making sure for time out etc…
It’s so important. A woman I know used to take her dogs on search and rescue missions. She said once they helped try to locate people under the rubble after an earthquake… the hardest part was making sure the dog some down time. The traumatized people wanted to interact with the dog because it was so soothing to them, but she needed to protect the poor dog, too.
I love dogs… cats too, for that matter. Human beings are not worthy of them. Love, Andrea xoxo
Amazing what a dog can be trained to do
It is amazing what dogs can do and also the people who train them to do it. good luck on the email dump…
I’ll bet there are plenty of other things dogs could sniff out for us, given the appropriate training. This looks like a great way of saving bees.
Another wonderful way, in which dogs, help us. Because helping bees, certainly helps us.
Hooray for you, with your e-mail clean out!!!!!!!!
