This is the time of year when gardeners are supposed to have way too many squash. I still remember the story of a fellow who moved to a small town and asked if it was a safe place. He was reassured that no one ever had to lock anything, except in August. Then if you didn’t lock your car you might find that someone had put some squash in it while you were gone.
Unfortunately that isn’t our problem. Our squash plants have big leaves, but the longest squash are only about five or six inches long.
Figuring out why is another thing to add to the list, but keeping the defensible space and protecting the fruit trees are more important. No danger of boredom here.

maybe you just need a different variety …
hey that’s a good idea, order a whole lot of varieties for next season! 🙂
that will be Andy’s next challenge…so that you don’t waste time in years to come…
You know you wanna do this!!
Actually, the packet the seeds came from contains different varieties. We’ll have to see what we get next year. 🙂
My father-in-law used to have a big garden and he did grow squash. We had more squash than Carter has pills. And eventually they were HUGE:) I personally like the little ones”)
I like the little ones too, but maybe slightly bigger than 5″. Anyway, we’re enjoying what we have.
Love that story of the squash and the unlocked car.
Yes, that story is a winner. 🙂
Gosh, those leaves are HUGE! I have heard that the smaller fruits and vegetables are, the more flavor they have.
Apparently they also are more nutritious than larger ones. 🙂
This is the first time I’ve heard of someone not having an over abundance of them. A friend of my husbands always used to drop off a bag full of them.
I know. That’s the way it usually works. 🙂
The smaller, the sweeter…and more tender! But, itmust be too early in the day,…why out squash in someone’s car? (blond roots here)
Because people are trying to get rid of their extra squash, they don’t want to throw them out.
I’m still looking for that grower that has too many zucchini – my plants have so far produced one. I came across zucchini pizza and zucchini quesadillas recipes that we want more of – maybe I should put a sign in our front yard “leave zucchinis here!”.
I think that’s a great idea!
I am thinking to that that must be a variety that they don’t get that big. We always like to pick them when they were small because they taste better the bigger they get the tougher they get. I do love squash and we’ve had them twice and the last week but I bought them at Walmart and I picked through and bought the ones that were four or five inches long and they had some that were seven or eight. Leslie’s are absolutely beautiful
OK, so we won’t complain. 🙂
They’ve been squashed! (BTW, I accidently deleted your comment on my RAIN post. If you want to do it again I’ll make sure it gets published.)
😀 No problem about the comment, it was mainly to let you know I read your posts.
The plant itself is a joy to look at…it is beautiful.
Mainly I like watching things grow. If we get any produce it’s a plus, but not the main thing for me.
LOL! I love the delightful story of the squash in the unlocked cars!
but I like smaller vegetables too. I always think they’re tastier.
especially little ‘summer squash.’ and it squeaks in your teeth when you eat it. every notice that? 😀
No I hadn’t, but I’ll pay more attention now.
