Why I Don’t Want a Pet

Thank you, Rose, for telling me about this video.

I’ve never had a pet as an adult. I love dogs, but I’m too much of a sucker for soulful looks to be a good human for one. Now thanks to the video I realize there’s another reason… I love being able to sleep in if I need to. I had insomnia for about 40 years, and getting enough sleep is precious to me. I still don’t take it for granted.

  1. A Pet Rock would be a great substitute as long as it’s on a balanced surface…

simon is hilarious! he cracks me up every time.
especially funny at Christmas with the tree.
how no words ever and just a few line drawings capture the world of CAT!
    it’s wonderful.

If sleep is what you need, I can understand. Enjoyed the video a lot.

  4. I’m just the opposite. I can’t imagine ever living without a dog. Dreading it, in fact.

    • Jean says:

I certainly understand why people want dogs. I used to get my daily doggie fix by working with them over at the animal shelter…I still remember them and they warm my heart.

  5. Myra Guca says:

Too funny! My girls combine to get their way … yet their sheer joy in each new day is enviable.

  6. Rose says:

They always crack our granddaughter up…she notices a lot of the little things I miss.

I only let Jimmy and Enzo (2 of my dogs) sleep with me. The other dogs like to snooze in the laundry room. My cats aren’t allowed in my bedroom for just this reason, they are like Simon. I do need my sleep (but I’m the one who has to wake up Jimmy and Enzo! LOL!). On the very rare occasion that I really sleep in, Georgie my cat will sit outside the bedroom door and cry. But that’s pretty rare.
Usually it’s because the water bowl has become dry.
I know it will come as no surprise to you that I couldn’t survive without a pet.
Not kidding. I’ll need to have at least one with me forever. If I ever get to the point where they’ve all gone to Heaven and I’m old and frail myself, I’ll drive to the Humane Society and pick out the oldest and neediest one they have. I’ll do that until the end of my days. And if there comes a day that I’m unable to do that, then it will be time for me to go to Heaven too.
    Xoxoxo

Everybody wants to blame it on the cat. Here, kitty-kitty . . .

  9. Ginny Hartzler says:

We LOVE simon’s Cat! I have seen a lot of them, and they are all so cute and funny! We love cats too. Thanks for the fun.

  10. Ann Thompson says:

I had a cat that would bat at my head until I got up to feed him.

  11. Mike Goad says:

Years ago, we had inside cats that were destructive to our furniture. Once they were gone, we decided “no more,” especially since we would be traveling extensively after I retired and would have to have someone feed them and take care of their litter.

We’ve had people tell us, “you need to get a dog.” No…, we don’t. When we travel, we often go to places where dogs are not welcome on the trails, and hiking is one of our favorite activities.

We don’t dislike pets. They’re just not for us.

    • Jean says:

I’m with you… I love dogs, but having one right now isn’t for me. Maybe if something happens to Andy I could get an older one.

  12. Madsnapper says:

That video is exactly why I’ve never had a cat in the house. Cats are really bad about jumping on the bed and waking you up and walking around on your tummy while you’re sleeping. But I’ve always had a dog or dogs but they weren’t allowed on the bed and they did not wake us up but then we get up early so they didn’t have time to wake us up if we were normal and slept and they might have done so.

  13. I wish I still had a cat, today!!!!

    Today I found mouse droppings…

    ~sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh~

  14. nick says:

I love Simon’s Cat. Brilliantly drawn, and so true to life. But I wouldn’t want to own a cat. My sleep is erratic enough as it is, a cat would make things worse.

  15. Joared says:

Our cat and before that a dog didn’t get on the bed when we were in it so never a problem. It’s mostly in how you train them.
