Smoky

It’s a bit smoky down here, but not so bad we can’t keep the windows open at night.

It’s also noticeable up on the land:

The smoke is coming not just from a couple of small fires here in New Mexico, but also from Colorado, Arizona, and California.

It’s sad. I was born and raised in the California Bay Area and still have family there. Fingers crossed for everyone affected…it’s an ongoing crisis.

  1. I feel so badly for the people in the path of those fires, just so scary.

  2. Ginny Hartzler says:

What a beautiful mountainous area. I sure hope these places get a huge amount of rain.

  3. Hootin' Anni says:

my sister is “surroundrd” by fires in Colorado. Another reason for mask wearing.

    • Jean says:

We don’t wear masks outside of the grocery store, but we are keeping our windows closed. Fingers crossed for her and everyone else affected.

  4. Yep, smoke travels… 2020 just couldn’t get much crazier 🙁

    • Jean says:

2020 couldn’t get much crazier? Fingers crossed that’s true. We now have two tropical storms, Laura and Marco, threatening our southern gulf states. It’s unusual to have two at once.

  5. Rose says:

I really hate those fires…they are so scary to me.

    • Jean says:

We have a lot of respect for them too. We’ve had to evacuate our town twice so far — once in 2020, the second time in 2011.

I am careful for the people in the critters they were in the path of those fearful flames! Prayers for everyone in the path of the fires and for those who are getting smoke like you are. I know that these fires happen every year but it seems to me like they’ve gotten worse and worse and worse. That might be that it’s just because we have social media and know what’s going on and we didn’t in the past. Glad you are safe

I guess it’s time I watched the news. I had no idea that other states were fighting such fire. I only knew of California.
I find it sad beyond belief. just from knowing you and seeing the devastation that your own area’s fire made so many years ago. now a forest of giant skeletons.

  8. Yes, terrible fires…

But I am confused, I thought you lived, where you now call “up on the land.”

But you don’t? You live in apartments, in the first picture?

But you see bears, when walking, there?

    Very confused….

    ?????????

  9. Andrea says:

Oh yes, the wildfires. *sigh* My heart goes out to everyone & everything affected. Could you explain sometime, Jean, about your “living arrangement”? Sometimes I see your view which looks like it’s from an apartment complex and then sometimes your view looks like it’s on a vast amount of land. Do you live in both places, off and on? If so, why? Curious minds want to know. *haha* If it’s not too personal, that is. xoxo Love, Andrea

    • Jean says:

We live down here, and Andy drives up almost every day to work on his projects. I go up for picnics and every day when Kaitlin, Torben and the pups stay up there when they visit. It’s about an hour drive, half of it on rough dirt roads. Because of my eyes I drive only around town, or back from Santa Fe if necessary when Andy gets treated for his macular degeneration.

We’ve lived down here for almost 46 years now, and it’s our home. We’re hoping the eye doctors can keep his eyes going so he can continue driving up there. I’m 80 and he’s 85, and sooner or later we will need help in everyday living…that would be impossible to get up there.

The fires are so bad. We pray for the firefighters and the residents to be safe. It is so sad to learn about the deaths of people and animals. The weather man says we have some haze here due to the smoke but it isn’t apparent to us.

Woos – Lightning, Misty, and Timber

  11. Myra Guca says:

I was wondering about the impact – if any – the wildfires were having on your air quality. ‘MIssing my mountains!

    • Jean says:

At the moment we’re having an air quality alert. We had to sleep with the windows closed last night and may tonight too — there is another fire adding to the smoke.

  12. Ann Thompson says:

I can only imagine how scary it must be living in an area that is high risk for fires

  13. Bruce Taylor says:

Yes, the haze here from the California fires is nasty. Lots of sympathy for California.
