Flu Shots

We usually get our flu shots in October but I’ve read maybe mid-September might be better for those of us getting the high dose. Last year we had trouble getting it, our doctor’s office had run out and we were lucky that our pharmacy had just gotten a new batch in. I have my annual physical Friday and will talk to the doctor and see what she says.

I’m guessing that the COVID-19 precautions will also help us avoid the flu. Do you get a flu shot every year?

  1. yep, get the flu’ jab every year…this year strife, when doctors clinic ran out, but got at a pharmacy … it was interesting the procedure because we were in L/4 lockdown. I didn’t suffer for it other than usual sore arm from a few days.

however, what has been different this year, has been the lack of germs in the community and I’ve not even had a cold! I noticed the lack of hacking/coughing people all through L/4 because there weren’t many people at the bus station/buses/or even around on the streets…

Those people came back during L/3 & 2 but I just didn’t stay around, but rather I was soon into being able to walk back up to here. And during this last couple of week of L/3 again, I’ve reverted to just local walking…and online food shopping. Next Monday we are back to L/2 but now more arenas where masks are required..none of which should worry me, now I’ve found a way to make simple masks…

I’m glad you’re back to local walking, and I’m glad you didn’t have trouble getting your jab. I’m guessing people here who practice safe practices will have a lot less colds, too. I hope you won’t mind not taking your occasional trips. Andy and I don’t like to travel, but we do miss Kaitlin and Torben not being able to visit.

    • I do wish, I could take the “out of town trips” – friends do seem to either have gone on some or are going…but they are in the main younger. And most of them are travelling with another … which I think in a way is an easier option; even having a vehicle or licence to kind of get away fast if you would need to…

Yes, I’m aware the young can get sick but they always seem, able to handle whatever is posed (wrong word) of them…I told Al & T that I will need photos galore of their ski trip to Queenstown coming up in a few weeks time, so I can “couch travel with them”

I was just thinking of my 2019 Mar trip – and the idea I thought I would do it again, and travel around a bit more… 🙁 seems not gonna happen for now…

      🙁 That’s too bad.

last winter was the first time I’ve had a flu shot OR a pneumonia shot.
and I’m glad I did. I did feel protected and I didn’t seem to have any bad reaction or side effect. this year I guess I’ll do the same. especially now with the COPD and taking Trelegy for that. I guess it couldn’t hurt. I’m trying to just keep my immune system as strong as possible too. ie.. I’ve taken Vitamin D supplement for years and they say that is good for helping to not get Covid.
    so… who knows?

I became a true believer in flu shots about 30 years ago when I came down with the flu. I decided I didn’t want to do that again if I could avoid it. 🙂

  3. The OP Pack says:

We both get flu shots every year, also usually in late October or early November. Hubby talked to his doctor this week and he said if you get it too early it won’t be as effective in February when the flu can be peaking. He said to aim for no later than mid-October.

    • Jean says:

Thank you! We used to get ours the end of October for the same reason you do, to still be protected in February. Then last October 25 we had trouble getting our double dose…your doctor’s opinion of mid-October at the latest helps.

  4. I always get a flu shot but I won’t be at the front of the line for the civid-19 vaccine when it comes out. It’s being rushed to market.

    • Jean says:

We plan to wait too. The flu shots have been around a long time and have a great track record.

Our doctor wants us to get the new shingles shot…we had the old one years ago and want to wait until they know more about the side effects. I did get shingles in my left eye in spite of the first shot, but I think the shot helped with the severity and hopefully gave me a bit more immunity.

  5. Rose says:

I have never gotten the flu shot, but Roger always has…he had to for work. so has continued.

    • Jean says:

Apparently not getting it has worked for you. I suppose it depends on how much you interact with other people and how many of those people have had the shot.

  6. Ginny Hartzler says:

Good for you! YES, we always get the flu shot. Usually in mid to late October. We get the extra strong shot, which I call “The Geezer Shot”. We are talking to the doctor on the phone tomorrow, and I will ask her when to get it. Then I will let you know on your next post.

  7. Hootin' Anni says:

we’ve gotten the flu vaccine too

  8. Ann Thompson says:

Nope, I’ve never gotten a flu shot. I asked my doctor one time if they were really necessary and he said yes and no depending on what you do.

  9. Madsnapper says:

Funny you should ask because just a few minutes ago before I started looking at blogs I said to Bob I wonder why we haven’t gotten her notice from Publix that the flu shots are ready because we always get ours this is the week we get our flu shots the last part of August every year. I got free flu shots at work and when I retired continue to get them so I’ve been getting them for maybe 25 years

  10. Yes we do!!!

Talked to our doctor on Tues., and he said….. the same usual time. Late September. And we get the “big one” too! ~smile~

    ?????????

  11. Hahhh… Forgot again. and posted the late summer flowers and veggies line.

    ~grin~

  12. Myra Guca says:

Yes, absolutely. ‘Still remember lining up in grade school to receive my innoculations and sugar cube. 🙂

  13. No, I’ve never had a flu shot but I do keep up with a pneumonia shot for my lungs.

    • Jean says:

We had pneumonia shots when we turned 65, but they were a one- or two-shot deal as I recall. You are getting them more often?

  14. nick says:

Yes, I get my flu shot every year, and in recent years I’ve also had shots for shingles and pneumonia. I don’t understand these anti-vaxx fanatics who clearly take no notice of scientific evidence.
