An Interesting Experiment

When we went up to the land Sunday we picked this funny-looking squash:

It looks as if the shell hardened before the squash stopped growing, so the shell had cracked:

I couldn’t cut it with a knife, so I used a saw:

One piece looked better than the other, so I cooked that one in the microwave:

It didn’t taste bad, but I didn’t eat much of it. The exciting part is I can use sensor cooking on my microwave again…the microwave decides how long to cook things. I used to love that feature, but it stopped working on my old microwave years ago. Another plus for our new devices.

Oh my, I’ve never seen a squash that had to be cut with a saw…lol That’s a pretty cool feature on your microwave. Mine is rather old and it doesn’t have anything like that

  2. Rose says:

I am not a big fan of squash but my mom liked them. I like them to look at though…all the different shapes, etc. I have never seen one that had to have a saw used to cut.

  3. The OP Pack says:

So maybe sort of like a butternut squash that Mom refuses to buy because she can’t cut them:)? She is going to check and see if our microwave has that feature. If it does, she has never used it:)

I’ll buy butternut squash — I cut enough to make sure it won’t explode, then microwave it until it’s soft enough to deal with. I like summer squash better!

  4. I love squash, and got some in our “farm share” this summer that I wasn’t quite sure what to do with – So I gave them away! 🙂

Our washer & dryer is “automatic” it’s taken me getting sick to convince Carl that all he has to do is put the clothes in, detergent, or dryer sheet, and the washer and the dryer will take care of the rest if you select what you’ve just put in. Men!

I’m lucky that Andy does a lot of laundry. He did his own when he was in graduate school years ago and never lost the knack.

I’m sorry you’ve been sick and have had to say goodbye to Alf, and that early picture of Lenny is heartbreaking. Bless you for all you do.

I love summer squash and next year we’ll buy the seeds from a more reputable company!

  5. Ginny Hartzler says:

I don’t think I would have been brave enough to eat any of it. Strange!

  6. Hootin Anni says:

Now, if I had to cut it with a saw, I would have tossed it, or put it out for wild animals to enjoy. But then, the negative side to that would be that it may draw unwanted guests to the neighborhood. You were brave to even taste it.

I bake our potatoes with the microwave & set it for potato/2 & they come out perfectly cooked each time! No heat in the kitchen…no electricity wasted from using conventional oven.

  7. MadSnapper says:

that is something I have never seen, and i have seen a lot of squash growing in my lifetime. this is what our avocada are doing now, they get hard, after splitting and are not fit to eat, but we do get many that are normal. i would love to have a sesnor on our microwave, did not know they have those. we buy the small and cheap ones and that might be why..

    • Jean says:

I think your avocados are neat! The main thing is you get to eat some of them. Our microwaves are bigger than some because we do most of our cooking in them.

  8. Myra Guca says:

Brave lady! I love squash, but might be reluctant to eat that one. Next time we have to replace our microwave I’ll look for that sensor feature. Thanks for letting us know there’s such a ‘thing’!

  9. i feel liike not enough water through the seed – 2 – plant – 2- produce
