Coyotes

I told Andy that Sandra asked if we have seen coyotes. We do have them up there, so today when Andy stopped on the way up to take pictures of a disappearing pond he has been watching, he saw this coyote and took pictures.

This is the first picture:

Here it is zoomed in:

And zoomed in more:

And here’s the second picture zoomed way in:

Yes, we have coyotes up in the mountains.

Apparently Kaitlin has them in Massachusetts too. She wrote that a neighbor found a deer carcass in her front yard. It could have been caused by another animal, but that’s not the way we would bet.

  1. the part of the land looks rather dry – but a coyote – animal I’ve not seen, methinks…

  2. Ginny Hartzler says:

Wow! I sure hope people there keep their pets inside!

  3. tammy j says:

we have both coyotes and road runners here.
I missed the last post somehow. it was like having a little neighbor drop by!
these are great pictures of your coyote.
I used to hear them at night yelping to each other.
it’s a strange sound. kind of alarming in a way.

thank you Jean, the look a lot like ours here, Florida is now full of them and since we have paved their enviroment are coming into neighborhoods and getting small pets. we have seen one on our walk one time. i feel so bad for them, they have no where to go… love the photos, thanks to Andy

They’re incredibly smart and do very well in the urban environment. Andy and I saw one on the side of the road once, watching us go by. It didn’t cross the road until we had passed.

  5. Hootin' Anni says:

Beautiful photos! I think they’re in every state…just yesterday one was seen attacking a dog on the islands. (According to our local news)

    • Jean says:

They’re very adaptable, which is why they are thriving. Years ago I read about a woman who was walking her little dog here in town and the coyote started following them. It continued even when the woman started carrying the dog to protect it. She was not happy about that!

  6. Ann Thompson says:

In those first few pictures, it doesn’t even look like it’s aware that Andy is there taking it’s picture.
That would be something finding a deer carcass in your front yard.

    • Jean says:

The coyote was far away and apparently didn’t feel threatened. I wouldn’t like to see a half-eaten deer carcass in my yard!

  7. Grace says:

I live just a few miles outside of Washington DC and we have coyotes! It’s what I call an urban suburban area and the amount and variety of wildlife people report and post about seeing always amazes me – No bears so far but they do show up in nearby Maryland quite often.

  8. Myra Guca says:

At the resort where I worked (Phoenix), coyotes were constantly being spotted on the golf course. Always had to caution guests not to feed them.
My son and DIL are talking about getting a donkey so as to protect the deer that feed on their property. (I’d never heard of that, but it made me smile.)

  9. Bruce Taylor says:

We apparently have them with a den (or two) down in the flood plain at the end of our street. Sometimes at night we hear their yipping.

    • Jean says:

We haven’t heard them here in a long time, but when we first got here we would even hear them under our bedroom window, trying to catch a cat by the sound of it. It was nice to be safely inside.

  10. The OP Pack says:

We live in the heart of suburbia, and we have lots of coyotes. They follow the creek beds. We see them once in a while. We hear them at night, but luckily they don’t come too close to our yard. They have been known to steal small dogs from their yards:(

  11. Rose Swalls says:

I love seeing coyotes…there is just something so wild about them.

  12. Oh my! We use to have them come by but haven’t seen any in awhile. I’m thankful for that.

    • Jean says:

I like them, but not too close! Kaitlin and Torben won’t let the pups out after dark without a leash when they stay up on the land.
