As Usual…

life is seldom simple. I was going to write about cooking acorn squash vs pumpkins today, but when I tried to download my image I received this warning:

That would mean 50 pixels by 50 pixels. (And why are they talking about pixels instead of bytes?)

I waited for a while and tried again. It pays to be patient…this time it worked.

Anyway, I haven’t carved a pumpkin since Kaitlin was little, but I did try cooking one once. For me it wasn’t worth the trouble because of the size and trouble cutting it. I also mostly avoided buying winter (except for butternut) squash for the same reason. But after my experience with that tough squash we grew and cooked:

I decided to try some acorn squash and cook it in the microwave. I didn’t want to use the saw, so I just cut a hole in the top, scooped out the insides, and used the sensor cook on my microwave. That’s easy enough for even me to use, so I’m cooking a lot more of them now.

Life is one adventure after another.

It looks tasty. To me it just isn’t worth the trouble to cut up a pumpkin, although I do like to roast the seeds:) Even butternut squash is a challenge to peel. Enjoy.

    K.

  2. I buy raw pumpkin seeds along with other seeds which I mainly used in my own version of home baked granola

I don’t always want a pumpkin because I end up with my saw – and I don’t have much luck because I don’t have the strength. I never peel them until after I’ve cooked them – usually nowadays roast them…

If I’m not using my trusted frozen kernel corn or green peas – I like to have plenty of other veg in the house for variety. Having the frozen small veg is great because they are easy to microwave in a container that is just the right size.

I just bought a new rice maker that is supposed to work in the microwave…haven’t tried it yet, as I have a whole lot of spuds and kumara…

A lot of people roast them, but we don’t have an oven so use the microwave. I’m guessing roasting would give them more flavor.

When I cook acorn squash, I bake them in the oven…cut in half, cleaned out (skin on)….I add butter when cleaned, pop them in the oven & roast ’em on a cookie sheet. Delicious.

I remember as a kid my mother would cook fresh pumpkin – for pies and we would roast the pumpkin seeds. While I like most varieties of squash the only one I cook is zucchini – and then it is fried to make ‘pickled squash’ – boring process but a delicious outcome. (Except the squash isn’t really pickled per se, it’s an Italian thing.)

I’ve never cooked a pumpkin but I have cooked an acorn squash. It’s been a really long time though because I’m the only one who ever liked them and it wasn’t worth the effort for just me. I’ve been wanting to try spaghetti squash though just haven’t gotten around to buying one.

When it comes to cooking I’m always taking the easy way out so have never cooked one of these squash that might need us all and the only way I’ll ever get to taste one is if I go to somebody’s house that has cooked one. I’ve never even bought one of these squash I only buy zucchini and yellow squash because they’re easy to handle and easy to cook and I love them and I’ve never cooked a pumpkin but my mother did. About the uploads blogger now has a mind of its own and does strange things and even my computer is doing strange things when not in Blogger the Windows 10 update messed with it of course of course

In general I’m with you about cooking…and about technical stuff. Of course, of course, of course they will mess things up for us. Gadzooks!!

I am not a lover of squash or pumpkin….it is the texture. but they smell sooooo good…I love the smell of a pumpkin pie, but no matter how I try, I cannot eat them. And usually if I like the smell of something, I will like it.

  9. I’m glad the microwave worked for that.
