Mountain Lion

We know about coyotes and are used to announcements about bears, but we sometimes also have warnings about mountain lions. Apparently one has been seen around the horse stables so the local paper has issued this warning:

Because this is a wildlife issue, New Mexico Game and Fish is on site today. They are evaluating the situation and will be in charge of taking appropriate action.

Until further information becomes available, residents are urged to avoid trails in this area and use caution if out on any of the surrounding trails; mountain lions can travel several miles in any direction in one day.

Be especially alert if traveling with dogs or children on trails.

People are supposed to keep their pets inside and domestic animals in barns or shelters.

Oh gosh! I saw a video on the news of a Mountain Lion threatening a hiker. He had unknowingly walked past a den with the cubs inside. The mom kept lunging at him, and he was lucky to escape with his life. I wonder if they will attack someone if babies are not around…

    • Jean says:

Rare ones aren’t afraid of humans and will attack even without babies. It will be interesting to learn more about his one.

  2. What a shame, I’m sure the fires out west are causing a lot of wildlife to shift their territories around and they end up clashing with humans.

  3. Rose says:

It would not be fun to be attacked by one…but, oh, how beautiful I think they are.

Truly a frightening development –particularly for Andy when he travels alone up to your land. Hopefully that cat will depart of its own volition!

    • Jean says:

The lion is down here, so Andy is miles away when he’s up on the land. Mostly they avoid humans so aren’t even seen…the rare ones that aren’t afraid are the dangerous ones.

  5. I’m not sure how I would react – but then again, we don’t have such large animals in the wild here…that decide to come into urban centers. The worse we have are vicious dogs that aren’t restrained…if I even see a dog not on a lead, I’m crossing the road pronto…

    • Jean says:

Basically if you see a mountain lion it may very well be dangerous. The only one I’ve see in the wild was crossing a road in Montana when I was driving. I stopped and it crossed in front of me with no problem. It was unusual enough that I still remember it.

Let’s hope no fatalities come from the sighting. Man OR beast!!

  7. MadSnapper says:

they are such beautiful animals, I hope he will be ok and everyone safe. I am familar with them because of Roming and Rolling in the Rockies. she shows videos from her cams of these magnifcent cats. stay safe

  8. Ann Thompson says:

Well those warnings would be enough to keep my off the trails. I wouldn’t want to take the chance of coming face to face with one of those.

When I was in high school, my nickname was “Cougar”. Years later when I would meet up with a former classmate they would call me that.
