The Air Gap

Yesterday we talked about Andy’s idea to circulate air between the greenhouse and a gap between the massive heat-absorbing wall and the insulated outer wall of the greenhouse. This is what it looked like as they were building it.

Last year we didn’t use the propane heater to add extra heat and we were surprised that the inside stayed above freezing all winter. (The red line represents the temperature in the greenhouse, the green line the outside temperature.)

Don’t worry about the details, but the following graph shows that the air coming from the greenhouse warmed the back of the wall between about 10 in the morning until about 8 at night. The rest of the time the air from the back of the wall was warmer than the air in the greenhouse…it was helping to keep the greenhouse warm.

Again, it’s a neat toy!

this surely isn’t a run of the mill green house?
I haven’t ever heard of them having the different things this one does!
those in England don’t seem to be as sophisticated. did Andy design yours?

The architect suggested the massive wall, Andy designed the air gap and air ducts with fans. The architect also told us about Florian, the company that made and installed the glass part. The design we used was actually a sun room rather than a greenhouse.

You two seem to be scientists of the first rank!

  3. amazing technology from Andy’s career in this field…with his additional “this can be done…”

I had no idea a sucessful greenhouse was so complicated!

It’s fascinating that you are able to record all that information.

I loved seeing the graphs very much…yes, double walls…acts like an insulator. High five to the builder/designer (Andy)!!

I think your neat toy is really fantastic! that graft says the whole story of how fantastic it is… hubby did a great job with that greenhouse

  8. And he had a great time, thinking it up, and building it!!!!!!!!

  9. What fun to be able to play with your “toy” and have it work the way you planned for it to work.

I enjoyed the graphs, too. We have all enjoyed this.
