I received a card from the Senior Center a few weeks ago. Among other things it said,
Hope your days are filled with new and interesting hobbies to keep busy.
It was a sweet thought, but Andy and I agree, our lives are more than filled with our old hobbies. It’s not that we get that much done, it’s that we get noticeably slower and slower as time goes on. We laugh about it and keep happily plodding along. The joys of living in the very slow lane.

the joys of living in the really slow lane are vastly under rated! XO
Agreed!
Us too!!
Good!
I never thought of it this way, but it is true, we don’t need as much to fill the time because we move so slow. i will be pondering on this. i enjoy what i do to pass the days, reading and commenting and creating posts, reading my books on Kindle, a movie at night and trying to force myself to throw in a little house work..
A kindred spirit, housework is far down on the list. 😀
…been living a life of free time since retiring long ago…I figure slow is good. Just like the tortoise, we come out winners!!!
The nice thing is there’s no race, we don’t have to compare ourselves with others. I’ve been retired 26 years now…I still don’t take it for granted.
I think I’ve lived most of my life in the slow lane and I kind of like it that way.
Hurray for that!
Three-and-a-half years away of a high-stress (work) environment, I’m still pinching myself. In my wildest dreams, I never imagined life in the slow lane would feel so good.
I’ve been retired for a lot longer than that, and I still don’t take it for granted. I love being able to decide how I spend my time.
-grin- Personally, all such “upbeat and peppy” admonitions, especially to older people, do not appeal to me. I can see some 21 year old, trying to think up some phrase, to put on a Holiday Mailing, to older people, of course. And very much missing the mark.
Not for want of trying, of course. Just….. From want of ever having been old, herself. -smile-
I agree with you 2!!!!!!! Hopefully, by the time we are older, we have found what makes us happy. And have some experience, doing these things. And continue to do them! Slower of course! -smile-
Without any well meaning but meaningless admonitions.
Yes, self-knowledge is an important part of happiness. 🙂
Now that you mention it, the things I enjoyed in my youth are still things I enjoy now, but add to that the internet, etc…but even they are used a lot in relation to my old hobbies…and my, have I slowed down!
The upside is we don’t get bored. 😀
