It Doesn’t Bode Well

The low Monday night was -8°F outside, 42.8°F inside the greenhouse. Our little propane heater was on with the thermostat set to 50° and that plus the residual heat in the wall was enough for one night. So the tomatoes looked all right yesterday, but notice the snow covering the roof of the greenhouse. The heat-retaining wall needs sun.

It looks as if it won’t get it today, more snow was predicted. Andy plowed Woodcutters Road and up to Cochiti Mesa yesterday and didn’t know if he would have to plow again today. We will soon find out.

Anyway, fingers crossed for the tomatoes.

    How beautiful everything is!!

We hope the tomatoes make it. We had -11 this morning and very cold all day. We hear there is a warmup coming and we may be above freezing by Sunday. One daughter here has frozen pipes in one bathroom where the pipes are on an outside wall. Our washing machine pipes are on a garage wall and they froze. But a space heater running all day did the trick so the laundry could get done. But my poor son in Texas has multiple sinks, toilets, and tubs with frozen pipes. Their city is under a boil water order and last I heard there was the likelihood of no water supply for the city tonight – scary!!!

What a mess! A friend in Corpus Christi says they’re without water and power. It’s scary. I’m glad you could get your laundry done. Our low wasn’t nearly as bad as yours. Is it unusual for you?

The snow is beautiful but I am sure it causes havoc when it’s so much and so cold. I do hope your tomatoes make it and that you and yours stay warm and safe.

oh my. I hope the tomatoes make it too!
Andy did a wonderful job of plowing!!!
the electric companies are going to start a plan for power outages here.
apparently even in states north of here all the way to the gulf.
they’re low on natural gas or something.
they say it will only last an hour each time they do it.
    exciting times we live in!

    Rooting for your tomatoes!
We had but a few anemic snow flurries this morning, but nothing like this beautiful offering.

  6. Ann Thompson says:

The views are simply amazing. Too bad the view alone can’t keep the tomatoes warm. Hoping for sunshine

  7. MadSnapper says:

I hope your plants survive this cold. that propane is doing a good job to keep it to that temp in negative degrees. hope that sun pops out to warm it up

Andy originally was going to use the greenhouse as a season extender. He didn’t expect to have plants all year long. He had the little heater installed for times like this, when there were crops that needed a boost of heat for a couple of days until the sun came out again. It’s fun to see how it works. 🙂

  8. Bruce Taylor says:

Mother Nature has her own ways. I’m trying to push some of our sunshine over your way to melt that snow and help the tomatoes.

  9. Rose says:

At times like this, well, at any time I wish I had a woodburner that I could use. But weather like this makes it seem like a really good idea. I would not get anything done, then, cause there is nothing better than sitting by a fire.

  10. An art friend of mine in Texas has had the similar snow storm – and stated that homes were not built for that type of weather – so there have been major problems including electricity outages and of course the actually house construction. Adding that not many people have the right clothing…

Definitely the weather for the most of USA is not a great way out of Winter and into Fall/Autumn…

    Hope everyone is coping

    • Jean says:

Things are fine here, but Texas is a different story. That’s where Beate and Tim are. They have a small generator so have heat, but the main water line burst in the city so their water was out. It’s even grimmer for some people. 🙁

    • oops just said basically the same thing about Texas issues on the next post – I couldn’t remember which blog I said it on…apolgies
