Wildlife

I was on our swing downstairs today while the girls were out. They started to chase something which usually is a chipmunk as they pretty much have chased out most of the voles. I suddenly heard hissing and turned around and saw something that looked like a ferret. I called Torben down and it went under the fence. We looked it up and apparently it is a weasel!

She said it was too bad they didn’t get a picture of it, but she did get this picture of Torben holding the snake she saw later.

I was watering a potted plant just a few minutes ago and realized it needed more dirt. I went to get the potting soil and came back and there was a snake right where I had been standing, with it’s head up eyeing me! I called for Torben who came and grabbed it and took it down the street so the girls (aka Zoe) wouldn’t kill it/get bit. Huh! I am now back on our deck. It seems much safer.

I’m with her. I didn’t know garter snakes bit. Whenever I’ve seen one it was trying to get away from me and I was happy to let it go.

  1. The weasel is kind of cute but I don’t know if I would feel the same way if it was in my yard. Snakes I don’t like whether they can bite me or not

Yikes!! Well, I guess ALL snakes bite,it is just a matter of if they are venomous. The Weasel is aforable! The snake is not.

that just gives me the shivers and the willies!
what are willies? I have no idea. we just always used to say that.
they say garter snakes are good for one’s garden. but …. sorry.
I’m with Kaitlin. I’d stay on the DECK! even then I’d keep an eye out! XO

  4. Yikes! I would never pick up a snake no matter how harmless the breed.

Yikes, indeed! Every time our girls chase a chipmunk under the storage shed I pray they won’t encounter a snake.
Could be, I’m cut out for high-rise living? LOL.

I’ve been working on my yard to the point where I am totally exhausted but it doesn’t take much these days… my friend has been coming over once a week and helping me and now the top of my yard is all cleared and bare and in the corner we’ve been burning branches and things… anyway everything is cleared and there’s no grass at all on the top of the hill but along my driveway I have tons of flowers and in the front of the house I have a bunch of flowers too but in the backyard there’s nothing except for the patio area which is enclosed with fencing so that my dogs can be safe. Way down on the bottom of the hill it’s sort of a ravine and my yard is lower than the other yards so it’s kind of swampy down there but it’s far away from the top of the hill and like I said my patio is cement and right up against the house. Me and my niece sat at the picnic table last night in the middle of the yard and had dinner and I told her how I haven’t seen a snake this year and while they’re probably down on the bottom of the hill in the swamp I feel really safe up on top of the hill.

This morning I let the dogs out for their morning potty and I went to the door to let them in and out of the corner of my eye I see a snake on the patio slither under my cellar door. There’s several steps it would have to go down and then it would be met with a big door to the basement and to put it lightly I freaked out. I ran around pouring everything I could find on the cellar doors! vinegar, Ajax hot water dishwashing soap the last of the bleach everything I had in the house and then more hot water but it never came ou.t I know it sounds cruel but I am truly terrified of them. eventually I went back outside and with all the nerve I can muster I pulled the doors open and looked down the steps and saw nothing. They are just old open wooden steps with dirt under them… I don’t know where it is but to say that I’m upset is to put it lightly.
    🙁
