It Looks Like They Dodged a Bullet

I was just checking to see what the conditions were around Donner Pass, which Kaitlin, Torben, and the pups drove through Tuesday. This is a tweet from Caltrans District 3:

Icon overload! When our http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov traffic map looks like this, it’s a clear red flag that Sierra travel is not advisable today. We’ve had to hold traffic on Interstate 80 and Highway 267 and Highway 89 around Emerald Bay is CLOSED again due to unsafe conditions.

This chart gives the meanings of the icons:

I had been watching conditions there and was relieved when they were through that region. The storm hadn’t hit yet.

I do love the internet. I don’t worry much at all, but I do love to gather data and see what’s going on. Hurray for curiosity. It keeps my mind well-exercised and me mentally healthy…and endlessly entertained.

I freely admit to being a worrier. it’s something in my nature I continually work on. I KNOW it’s pointless!
is that the same Donner Pass where the people were stranded in the 1800’s?
it’s famous for being a brutal stretch of pathway. whether a modern road or the way the early settlers had to travel!
I’m so glad your family got through it when they did! xo

  2. great to know that they “Missed” the weather in the Pass. Pass(es) in NZ are notorious for bad weather…especially in the Southern Alps

From East to West coasts have Arthurs Pass – the train does across via the pass. Most of the other passes are often closed due to weather.

One spring Andy and I were driving home through Yosemite Park (same mountain range) and couldn’t leave the way we wanted. We could have made it in our four-wheel drive car but they made us go miles out of our way because we didn’t have chains. It made sense. I wasn’t worried about Kaitlin, Torben, and the pups being in any danger, but it could have meant huge delays.

Yes, there’s a mass of intriguing information on the internet. I like the sites that show every plane in the air, where they started from and their destination. There’s a hell of a lot of planes up there!

What a relief! Like Sandra, I had to consult Google re. the Donner Pass. I love snow and ice, but it’s been so many years I dare not attempt to drive in it again.

  9. I’m glad they made it through. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

    I’m glad they are safe.

My sister in Vermont messaged me that she was leaving work and that there was snow and icy roads. I made her promise me that she’d message me when she finally got home. She just did a few minutes ago and I was worried until she did. I agree! Thank god for the Internet and cell phones!
