The Big News Here…

isn’t the fire. It’s that we’ve taken this time to upgrade our phones to 4G. We had to do it before the end of the year and we knew it would be a big hassle. It was that, but we now have one new phone and another will be shipped around May 13. That one will take longer because Andy wanted the version with no access to the internet. We had been told that if we accessed the internet it would be $15/GB. Instead it’s $1.99/MB so he wants to be sure he can’t accidentally push some wrong buttons.

All of Verizon’s flip phones get horrible reviews, which is one reason we were loath to change, but I do like this one.

The old phone is on the left, the new one is on the right.

I find it intuitive and the buttons are easy to use. Fingers crossed it holds up and that we can get good reception. We obviously can’t test it up on the land for quite a while. They first estimated the fire would be contained today, with any luck it will be contained in a week or so. A lot of it depends on the winds.

Here are two pictures a neighbor sent this morning.

I hope the new phones work out and get great reception.

    • Jean says:

Thanks. We’ll have to wait until we can go up into the mountains to check the reception there, but so far I love this new phone.

Of course there’s interest! We care. You are friends. I’ll click on links when I’m done commenting. I wish all phones would go back to flip style again. I like them. There is no butt calls carrying them in a pocket.

    • Jean says:

Apparently a lot of people are interested in flip phones now. 🙂

Please don’t feel you have to click on the links. I didn’t watch them today…up to my ears in dealing with Verizon and a computer problem. It will be different when the winds pick up again.

I clicked on the additional links you’ve provided.
they are impressive in their Calmness and ability.
keeping you always in my thoughts. everything’s crossed! XO
and ps… I LIKE the new phone!

  4. Ginny+Hartzler says:

Your new phone has a bigger screen! That is always good. I sure hope the winds die down!!

  5. Ann Thompson says:

I like the bigger buttons on the new phone. I find it hard to use the extremely small buttons on most cell phones.
Praying that the winds work in favor of the firefighters.

    • Jean says:

I love those buttons! It’s easier to type on them than to type on my iPhone. Fingers crossed the phone holds up.

  6. I was faced helping a friend with one of those flip phones – and I’d forgotten how difficult they are to use – to type within. I much prefer to have a keyboard that I only have to tap once to get a letter. But if you’ve happy with hitting the numbers to get your ABC then okay.

Glad you got your phone and another on the way. I did not know flip phones had internet access. the first one I got was 2004 and it was just a phone. prepaid minutes for ER use only. when I got the message tracfone was upgrading to 3 they offered a really cheap smartphone and that was my first, when they upgraded to 4 i went with the big 6 plus inc screen. I still have trouble seeing on it… glad you told us about this, if i ever get bob a phone will get the one with internet

    • Jean says:

I think most “dumb” phones now have internet access. Our old ones also had it but we never accessed it. Our phone is the TCL Flip Pro and cost $80 from the Verizon site, we paid $120 at our local Verizon-authorized store. They also charged us an extra $35 for hand holding, in addition to the $35 Verizon charged for activating it. It was worth it for the first one to get us started. I would much rather have this than SIM card in my iPhone. It’s easier to type messages. I do carry my iPhone in my pocket when I go out because of the camera.

  8. Somedays I wish we’d bought Tom a phone w/o internet. (Jus’ saying …)

    • Jean says:

Andy was thrilled he has the option of no internet. He doesn’t want to worry about pushing the wrong buttons and racking up a huge bill.
