Learning to Steer My Ship

I spent most of yesterday afternoon creating a higher resolution version of this graphic:

Was it worth the time? Yes, not just for the image, no one except me cares about that, but for skill development. Using the Photoshop Elements and Preview tools takes a lot of practice. Even more important is learning to easily slip into the flow mode, having a focused mind in a relaxed body, getting curious, becoming absorbed in doing something for its own sake, not pushing towards a goal, a finished product. It’s nice when the results turn out to be something you like, but it wouldn’t be a waste of time even if it didn’t because you’ve learned a lot and you’ve practiced steering your ship.

It was good afternoon.

Awesome. Now, are you going to print this and maybe frame it? Or perhaps use it as a transfer & embroidery a sampler the frame it?

I like the difference. it seems easier for me to see.
but the main thing is you Learned something. and had an ‘adventure’ doing it!
all of life and our experiences could be like that if we had your attitude.
I’m working on it! 🙂 xoxo

thank you, now I will remind myself when I am learning new things that I am steering my ship and it is not about the end product. I love this and will try to remember it when I start to feel like I might be wasting my time.

Worrying and getting frustrated is a waste of time, playing, learning new things, creating is the best use of it IMHO.

I’m pretty good at learning new skills but I am very bad about actually finishing projects. 🙂

Success! On all levels, inner work, outer product. I love it, will also remember “steering my ship”. That gets harder when I allow myself to spend too much time reading the news…..

I skim the headlines but don’t spend much of my time on the news. I do like the Wondrium courses on big history. I’m an N in Myers Briggs, the big picture to keep things in perspective.

The new one is a bit fancier. This would be so much beyond me!

    • Jean says:

There’s a learning curve and it takes time and patience, but for the stuff I do it doesn’t take talent. Trust me, artistic talent is not my strength. 😀

  7. I often wish I was braver in playing with my computer. I’d love to learn how to do more with editing images and paint-box programs, etc. You are inspiring in your determination.

  8. I seem to be steering my ship or is it a fleet of ships almost everyday ….

  9. Ann Thompson says:

I can see the improvement. I spent a lot of hours in photoshop elements years ago. I would get lost in the process of editing a photo or learning a new trick. It saved my sanity.

What I want to know is donyou ever accomplish something on the computer, but cannot repeat the task because you have tried so many things you forget just what worked?

    • Jean says:

Usually if I’m trying to learn a tool or so I repeat them enough so it’s automatic, then I add new ones. I try to focus as much on skill development as the final product.

  11. Looks great! I fear Photoshop is beyond what my grey cells can grasp, but I’m taken with the idea of playing, simply for the sake of play.

    • Jean says:

I think Photoshop Elements is a lot easier to learn than Photoshop. I have a Photoshop subscription at the moment but I haven’t needed to use it. I probably won’t renew.

I find personality tests interesting and think it would be interesting to to take them periodically over our lifetime, then compare the results. Would they vary as we mature and our life experiences change? In any event, I did take this test just now, but did not purchase the report. It said I was a Type 8 but the description of that personality shared was incomplete. Suffice to say, it said I was independent with which I would totally agree.

    • Joared says:

I just found a more detailed description of Type 8/ on the test co. site. I am most definitely not the domineering type as it describes. Independent, yes. Interesting.
