Beate sent us this picture showing the defensible space around our buildings. (Click on pictures for higher resolution.)
It warmed my heart to see the clearing so well-protected, but I also recall how the area looked eleven years ago.
We loved those trees, but climate change is real and we don’t want to have to rebuild again.

it is heartbreaking to see what it was and is. that said, I am so glad the defensibale space worked and worked well
Thanks. 🙂
That is really beautiful back in 2011 but even more beautiful seeing the house still standing thanks to the defensible space
We’re really happy about that defensible space.
Oh yes, the forest is a place of wonder. But fire and climate change is altering the landscape for years to come. Your property looks quite defensively taken care of.
Fingers crossed!
What a mix of feelings! Admiration for your resilience, grief at what’s lost, renewed determination to be the A in Move, Adapt, or Die. (For more about MAD, and climate change, see Thor Hanson’s Hurricane Lizard and Plastic Squid.)
Thanks for the suggestion. I just bought the audible book.
it’s still so beautiful. and thank goodness it was saved this year!
I couldn’t imagine you both going through all that Again. XO
Thanks. 🙂
It’s looking good now!
🙂
yes it was saved this year, a grand plan of Andy’s for the defensible space that has worked – may life continue to be “okay”
Thanks. 🙂
Wow, that was a beautiful spot back then….but I don’t blame you, I would want the defensable space, too.
Knowing it was there helped a lot during the recent fire.
Sad to see the before and after but there is beauty in being able to see Mother Nature recover after a fire, I imagine.
We had the land for 35 years before the fire so we decided to stick with it and see how it recovered. It was a good choice. We now have 11 more years of family memories.
Photo #3 makes my heart smile. Sigh… change is inevitable.
Enjoy what we have while we still have it. Nothing lasts forever.
