A Sense of Direction

Quiet minds cannot be perplexed or frightened but go on in fortune or misfortune at their own private pace, like a clock during a thunderstorm.
––Robert Louis Stevenson

I like that quote, it reminds me of Alcott’s

I think in order for these to work (however imperfectly), we need to know our values, have a sense of direction. I articulated some of mine about 25 years ago: The Traits of Stress-Hardy, Resilient People. The first item was

They have a sense of meaning, direction, and purpose. They are value-centered rather than reactive and defensive. They understand that emotions are great sources of energy and motivation but are often poor guides for action. Instead these people use their values as guides.

YES, this s a good example to follow!

  2. my direction keeps getting jumbled – I get going on the “direction I want” and then someone puts a rotten apple in my nicely balanced cart and I’m again at the end of a “no exit road” – these last 2 days it’s been “not one but two rotten apples” and I’m trying to “see if I can get my direction back on deck” under the calming influence of being here for me and only me πŸ™‚

I think I’m still working on trying to figure out what works for me.

the words you wrote were what I followed until I was divorced after 19 years of marriage. then I took the wrong road and crashed into a wall that did not move. It took me 3 years to recover. Now I am somewhat that way but not fully

  5. I’m basically emotion-driven … all the time having to coax my rational side to come out of the closet. It’s a work in progress.

If I could just always apply it…..

  7. I think we are all value driven to some extent. Some of us just have poor values. An interesting choice though…between being value driven and emotion driven. I’m not sure being strictly one or the other is possible or even desirably.

Basically it’s about aligning our emotions and our values. Some values work better than others, that’s where awareness and choice come in. πŸ™‚

  8. I am not steering my ship at this time. Thank you for the words of encouragement.
