Weeder Update

Andy said Grandpa’s Weeder didn’t work very well for him on the mullein in our clearing — the roots were too firmly attached to the rocky soil. So I went up today and tried it. When the rocks were fine enough for me to push the weeder all the way in I could pull some of the smaller mullein out by the roots. When I couldn’t push the weeder all the way I could sometimes snap the whole top off with the roots left in the ground. And sometimes I could only tear leaves off the top.

We do have some mullein in real soil, so hopefully Andy will try the weeder there. Today he tried soaking roots of big mullein and then pulling them out of the ground.

Some came up easily, but in this case he had to get out a fork and really work at it. (Notice the size of the rocks.)

He will have plenty to do up there!

So, what do I think of Grandpa’s Weeder? I liked it. I didn’t have to bend over and strain my back, and even in our rocky soil it sometimes worked. Hopefully your soil isn’t that bad! It needs to be loose.

  1. good points on the weeder which obviously didn’t break – but learning what works best great news. good promotion for the tool…

    What a job!!!

Well it’s good that it works well in the right conditions. Those that are there sure are big. That must be some job getting them all pulled up.

the weed you are pulling is pretty, what would happen if you just let it grow? I don’t think the weeder would work here, our soil is sanding but it clings like rock to weeds, even the tiny little white flowers that I like are hard to pull out. we just mow the weeds down as long as bob can push the mower. none of our weeds are as big as that mulleun

We can’t mow because the ground is so rocky and uneven. Andy does have a brush cutter, which I think would be an easier way to go.

  5. Good to know! Our climate’s so humid, I think this might do the trick. Gotta run it by he who thinks he’s the boss.

A lot of our soil is like clay so maybe it wouldn’t work so well. But I see people pulling out dandelions with something similar. Thanks for the review.
