It’s Nice to Have Options

The pharmacy at Smiths is swamped right now. They are having trouble staffing and are doing the best they can, but there are shortened hours, no drive in service, and long lines.

I don’t take prescription medicines so it hadn’t affected me, but I started developing a parotid gland infection a few days ago. I’ve had them in the past, on the other side of my neck, and I don’t mess around with them. I was way too patient with the first one and it ended up being life threatening. (I’ll talk about that tomorrow.)

OK. I needed to face up to it and get a prescription for an antibiotic. I went to the walk-in clinic connected to my doctor’s group but the sign said they were closed. Say what?? I went to check and they were talking care of patients, but they had closed the line to new people coming in. It was the right choice…the patients in the waiting room had plenty of room for social distancing. I asked the receptionist what I should do and they said I could go the town’s urgent care center or I could phone back after 1 PM to see if they would be taking new patients then.

I opted for the urgent care center and was out of there in less than two hours with my prescription in hand. I had already remembered we had another drug store in town…they had handled the first Covid shots at the senior center, so I tried them. There was no line…I gave the person my prescription and insurance information and she said it would be about a half hour, that she could phone me. How great was that?! I hadn’t eaten so I drove home, had some lunch, and wrote my post. I drove back and picked up the pills when she phoned.

I’m so grateful I live close by and I had such great options. It could have been a big hassle.

Glad that this worked out for you! And that you did have an option because that line doesn’t look very nice. I’m glad you decided to go ahead and get the antibiotics and not wait until it got so bad7

Wow, this seems like a rare occurance. The drug stores here are pretty bad, they do not have near enough employees! One has to wait days for meds, and shortened hours. I hope your meds work quickly without any bad side effects. I am anxious to hear your story tomorrow.

Well after a rough start, that went well. Glad you were able to get in to see someone and get that prescription. I take a prescription drug for arthritis and have to get it refilled once a month. I request a refill through an app and then just go in and pick it up the next day. It’s always ready and normally there isn’t more than 2 people waiting.

  5. Gosh, I never considered the inconvenience of not having a drive-up window. My BF’s niece is a pharmacist for a major drug store in Florida. Not only are they short-staffed, but all the pharmacists (nationwide) have had — or are about to have — their salaries cut 30%.

This sounds unlikely to me. Can you provide an official source? I take a lot of meds so I need to know.

Hello Linda. Unfortunately, for the sake of my friend’s niece’s personal privacy I’m unable to share her name or any other identifying info. Only that it’s a major retailer/pharmacy in Florida and she has retained (legal) counsel.

I’m glad she’s going to fight it, but I’m surprised because most places are having trouble finding people to work.

  7. they call that “tinny” here – you manage to do something way faster than is normal…
