The Joy Diet

I was intrigued by the title of this book, so I started reading the sample. Why the word “diet”? Beck says when the word first entered the English language it meant a way of living or thinking. A few decades later it also meant “a day’s journey.” That reminded me of Matsuso Basho’s,

Every day is a journey, and the journey itself is home.

To me that means life isn’t about accomplishment/reaching goals, it’s how we live our individual minutes and days. If we live them well we are grounded, we are home.

Anyway, I’ve been on my own “joy diet” for years so I was curious to see what Beck has to say. The very first step was an eye opener because it doesn’t apply to me. That revelation alone was worth the price of the book for me. I’ll talk about that tomorrow.

Would I recommend the book? Not to most people, but I’m guessing there are some things in it I’ll agree with.
