Auld Lang Syne

Andy and I don’t celebrate New Year’s, so Saturday night he went to bed around 10, the usual time, and as usual I stayed up past midnight. As the year changed I was catching up on blogs, reading and commenting, answering comments here, etc. It seemed the perfect way to welcome the new year in.

One of the bloggers I follow, Angus in Scotland, gave this link to Auld Lang Syne, a song that always touches my heart. It’s the first time I heard all the lines.

I had trouble hearing the words, so I looked up the lyrics:

Should old acquaintance be forgot
and never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot
and old lang syne?

[Chorus – this part repeats after every verse]
For auld lang syne, my dear
for auld lang syne
we’ll take a cup of kindness yet
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup
and surely I’ll buy mine
And we’ll take a cup o’ kindness yet
for auld lang syne.

We two have run about the slopes
and picked the daisies fine;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot
since auld lang syne.

We two have paddled in the stream
from morning sun till dine
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

And there’s a hand my trusty friend
And give me a hand o’ thine
And we’ll take a right goodwill draught
for auld lang syne

Here’s another version that a newsletter mentioned:

Again, I was touched. It blows me away the wealth we have available to us on the internet.

    Yes, internet is grand!!

  2. Ann Thompson says:

If you can imagine it you can likely find it on the internet somewhere. Google has become my new best friend asking her all kinds of questions on a regular basis.
I can’t remember the last time I stayed up to ring in the new year.

I love his voice and the way he sings, and the choir is beautiful. I tried to decide which I liked best, but both are equal, same words, different sound and both very pleasing. Time Long Past should not be forgotten for sure

In one sense the choir is more beautiful, but I love him because his age and accent seem to be more like what the song is about.

  4. Beautiful! I’d never heard all the lyrics before, but may have to play this on the next “New Year” eve (aka, my birthday).

  5. Both are lovely. Thank you for sharing.

  6. I went to bed earlier as I was tired – I’d a few days of grief – but then the locals got out their fireworks and that was the end of any sleep until it all died down about 1am!

  7. Ginny+Hartzler says:

Previously, I had no idea that this song had any more verses than the one! Funny how most singers only sing the first verse.

  8. I enjoyed hearing it again here – I’d not heard it before Angus posted it.

But I did stay up until after midnight – Mostly because I was catching up on my “Lab Rescue Homework” that I’d not gotten done during the week, and I’d had a nap earlier in the afternoon which helped. So, onto 2023 we go.

And as the year starts, my gratitude and a grateful thank-you to you for everything!! ¸¸.•*¨*•*´¨)
